WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s a political role reversal: Republicans are blasting a plan by President Barack Obama to consider selling the Tennessee Valley Authority, a New Deal-era agency long targeted by conservatives as an example of government overreach.
Obama’s budget proposal calls for a strategic review of the TVA, the nation’s largest public utility with 9 million customers in seven states from Virginia to Mississippi. Obama says selling the U.S.-owned power company could reduce the federal deficit by at least $25 billio

Headline is misleading...only the Tennessee Republicans are against it, which they probably have to pretend to be (which is problem with big govt in the first place, people get used to the jobs).

The TVA should have been sold decades ago.

Unless there is something hidden in the proposal, the GOP should agree to this. Cutting back the size of government is almost always a good thing. Obama has made a total of two positive proposals in the past five years, and the GOP has criticized both of them. We should welcome a more accurate inflation index for social security, not criticize Obama for it, and we should welcome finally selling off the TVA - so long as it is a public sale and not a payoff to his corrupt cronies.

So, the same guys who rushed to the defense of Memphis-based Gibson Guitar when they were raided by Obama’s thugs.

What makes you think they're pretending?

Conservatives all over the country rushed to Gibson’s defense...conservatives all over the country are not going to rush to keep TVA public.

I suspect some are, and some are not. Lamar is kind of squishy, but TVA is considrered a God send to many in Tennessee...one of those issues that is damned hard to deal with for a TN conservative. The voters love it the way it is....sadly.

Of course, as soon as the Feds sell the TVA, the environmentalists will swoop in with all manner of suits to have the dams dismantled.

Further proof that most professed conservatives are completely and unequiocally against all forms of government welfare...except their own.

Even if true it’s better than liberals who are for all forms of government welfare.

I would modify your statement to a slight degree - I would say that many voters, inclduing many conservatives, are too short sighted to look past the most rudimentary and immediate consequences of any action. Sometimes politicians lead voters down the bad path - but in this case - I think ignorant voters are leading politicians down the wrong path. TVA is religion in Tennessee. It just is.

This reminds me of the conversation Thomas Sowell and Jesse Helms had about tobacco support legislation. On balance, Jesse was as good a conservative that the US Senate has ever seen. He voted wrongly on this one issue. He knew it. His chat with Sowell about it is very informative.

That sir, is worth repeating....so I'll repeat it:

Even if true it’s better than liberals who are for all forms of government welfare.

Sometimes the problem is reality.

Well, since you asked the question:

However, don't let this headline fool you. Only 1 Repub is mentioned. I predict they will not stand in the way of this, but all Tennessee politicians will protest...every single one of them.
