A person briefed on the Boston Marathon investigation says the explosives were in 6-liter pressure cookers and placed in black duffel bags.
The person says the explosives were placed on the ground and contained shards of metal, nails and ball bearings.

Unregistered used pressure cookers are found at thrift stores and garage sales all across the US! They can be purchased without a background check!

Good choice. All American was the only one my mom would use. She trusted the seal. She was a bit jumpy around pressure cookers.
Another device was reported under the grandstands but has since been scrubbed from what can tell. It had reached the point of beginning to smoke.
The possible device under the grandstands maybe is the one we originally heard was doused with water by Fire Department?
President Barack Obama said called the explosions a terrorist attack and said law enforcement and intelligence officials were trying to determine who was responsible.
Never mind the grammar, Obumster never said "terrorist attack".
None of my three pressure cookers were bought retail. Sadly, they were lost last week in a boating accident.
I also heard in the Boston press conference this morning that there was a bomb sweep early in the morning, and then another at about 11 a.m.
Maybe the pressure cooker prevents the gunpowder scent form leaking out, so that it’s not detected by bomb-sniffing dogs.
I suspect that both factors are at work - elimination of odor detection as well as a containment vessel for the explosion.

Very good! The standard capacity of a modern, magnetic stainless pressure cooker, is 6 liters. Various models are produced from 2L to 10L.
The magnetic stainless models are induction capable. When I read the article it seemed to dispel the notion of a cellphone activated ignition. Cell phone functionality is less than ideal here, with a typical low quality connection. I picked a 6L pressure cooker from the cooking school for a test & we were unable to get a ring from a disposable phone sealed inside. I suspect a clever person could design an alternative.
Sugar is not explosive by itself, needs an oxidizer like potassium (or sodium) nitrate. That's what the Palli's use in their "junkyard" rockets for fuel.
