Texas Soldier Arrested for ‘Rudely Displaying’ Weapon
National Review Online ^ | 4/16/2013 | Charles C. W. Cooke

Posted on 04/16/2013 7:16:35 PM PDT by NewJerseyJoe

I just got off the phone with Army Master Sergeant. C. J. Grisham, a serving American soldier and veteran of the the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, who recently was illegally disarmed by the Temple Police Department while out for a walk with his son.

“We live out in the country in Texas, near Temple,” he told me. “My son and I were on a ten-mile hike so that he could earn his hiking merit badge – it’s the last badge he needs to become an Eagle Scout.” But half way into the hike, Grisham said, “a police officer pulled up.” Initially, he was “cordial” and he “asked what we were doing.” Grisham told him. “Then he looked at my rifle. I carry a rifle any time I walk around because there are feral hogs and cougars and things like that.”

From here, things took a turn for the worse.

“‘Where you going with that rifle?’ he asked me. I said, ‘does it matter? Am I breaking any laws?’” Then, he says, the officer “grabbed the rifle without telling me – but it was attached to me. My immediate reaction as a combat veteran was to grab it back and then take a step back. I asked him what he was doing. So he pulled his gun on me. Then I thought about my son, so I put my hands off my gun and he told me to move over to the car. Luckily my son had the video camera to document the hike for his merit badge. I told him to turn it on.”

“Log-in and password required. Why is that? Trying to make business?”

I did not need one when I went there yesterday. I am running a linux operating system. Otherwise, I do not know.

The soldier’s behavior was a little confrontational which they probably aren’t used to out in the neck of those woods.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little confrontational? THATS an understatement. Grisham goes on a Boy Scout hike with an AR-15 strapped to his chest with a video camera to capture the action.
He staged this. Then when he tied to grab a weapon back from the officer on the scene?
What a jerk. He’s lucky he didn’t get shot on the spot.
Not sure about Texas, but in a lot of places you can’t carry a rifle ‘in the field’ without a hunting license. Did Grisham have a valid one?
Very doubtful in Texas or in most if not all places in the West (maybe in Kommiefornia) or the South. Check the Eastern Dem states though.
Seems to be a growing industry in the last few years.
They always have plenty of cameras, not that that's a bad thing, nor that the cops are good.
It kind of reminds me of bear baiting. The only problem is when they run into a REAL bad cop, no one ever hears from them again.
No they dont but as former LEO I know why they pulled the guy over to question him which they are completely in their rights to do so f they observe an activity that could be construed as questionable or suspicious. His appearance and the appearance of the type weapon he was carrying. I will guarantee you that the officers wouldn’t have been so “cordial” if the soldier’s son and the camera weren’t present (witnesses). The soldier’s behavior was a little confrontational which they probably aren’t used to out in the neck of those woods.
I agree with you that the soldier was rather confrontational. The cops did say someone called in and said someone was walking around with an assault rifle.
I know people freak out about that now, but the cops were duty bound to check out the complaint. We obviously didn’t see the very beginning of the confrontation, but this soldier wasn’t exactly very polite either.
I think sometimes things ratchet up based on the behavior of both sides and the soldier was doing the pushing here. Yes, the cops said some ridiculous things but so did he.
Maybe the cops don’t but he does. After WWI people bought Mauser -type bolt-action rifles, like the Springfield. After WW II many bought semi-autos, like the Garand. This combat vet had an AR-type?
Send that deputy dawg hog to an NRA seminar and a disciplinary notation in his record.
If that’s acceptable to the vet-citizen.
1.If I was worried about feral hogs and cougars I would not carry an AR type weapon. There are plenty of semi-automatic shotguns and high caliber rifles out there that do not scare the low information voters and would be more effective against hogs (those hogs can get real big)..
2.When I am confronted by an LEO the first word out of my mouth, just like in boot camp, is Sir. I'm very respectful, I call them Sir or Ma'am and I go with the flow. I've never had trouble when I've acted this way. The only trouble I've had was in my younger days when I was drunk and stupid and probably deserved the treatment I got from the LEOs.
Poor as sh*t muzzle discipline by the cop disarming him. Guy needs remedial training. Actually, he needs to be fired, he’s a liability to the dept.
My second grade teacher told my mother at a parent-teacher conference (a loooooong time ago) that I have an “overdeveloped sense of fair play”... like that is a bad thing.
Needless to say, the scene that day played out very much like the scene in the movie Uncle Buck where John Candy tells the Principal where to stick it.
“Nah. Pretty commonplace. It’s not like a cop has to be smart or anything. Apparently in Texas the dumber the better.”
I ain’t going to sit here and tell you ever officer on the force is a genius but i don’t think they are stupid. What bothers me is many of them are ignorant about the very laws their suppose to be enforcing.
Don’t get me wrong the legal code is horrifically complex but if your not sure its illegal DON’T ENFORCE IT!
The man should be scolded and given a copy of Texas law to review. His peers should be making him the butt of a few jokes for weeks. Although I would not go so far as to fire him on this occasion. If he does it a few more times then yes they need to let him go.
“The soldier’s behavior was a little confrontational which they probably aren’t used to out in the neck of those woods.”
WRONG. The cop was confrontational and the soldier was defensive.
The cop is just following orders, the admin. want to destroy the military and replace them with diplomats and big city types from both coasts, no patriots need apply.
the powers that be wants a military just like they have in Europe, no fighting men or woman fit in the new America soon to be just like Europe
