National Republicans are pulling the plug on Mark Sanford’s suddenly besieged congressional campaign, POLITICO has learned — a potentially fatal blow to the former South Carolina governor’s dramatic comeback bid.
Blindsided by news that Sanford’s ex-wife has accused him of trespassing and concluding he has no plausible path to victory, the National Republican Congressional Committee has decided not to spend more money on Sanford’s behalf ahead of the May 7 special election.

GOOD!
A few years ago he had a good shot at winning the GOP nomination for president and now he can not even get the support of his own party to win a House seat.
He is the GOP’s John Edwards.
Good for the GOP. Of course, his transgressions would be resume enhancers if he were a democrat. They would support him if he’d been caught on video having sex with a dead underage goat while accepting a bribe at midnight in the basement of the Chinese Embassy.
So a democrat will take the seat for a year and a half and then we take it back with a non-selfish, trying to get back into government candidate.
Now he finally has time to hike the Appalachian Trail.
Is there any way of putting in a substitute candidate at this point? Hell, even a pot smoking Libertarian who is with conservatives on 80% of other issues is better than a GOP version of John Edwards.
If he were a RAT he’d be a victim and a hero. That’s the difference between them and us.
You do realize that he won the GOP primary? What does that say about South Carolina Republicans?
Well....They got something right for once.
Another “safe” red seat thrown away because of a terminally flawed candidate...
This is the district that launched the career of Tim Scott - WTF happened to the voters down there?
He was the GOP nominee. That any better??
Can anyone vote in the primaries in SC? IOW, maybe REpubs didn’t nominate him.
we need ALL the pubs we can get, even the flawed ones....
funny how he was supported wildly here until his affair came up, then whammo, the holier than thou conservatives want him tarred and feathered....
we need him...we need him badly even with his sin....
we all sin in some way.....
So now Colbert’s sister will be in congress??? What the hell is it with these Al Franken types?
Well, I agree with your over all sentiment, the Pharisees are out - but there is no reason for him to run again this soon, and above and beyond his affair - the dude was just weird, and his behavoir bizarre - and he’s obviously selfish beyond even the normal politician....
In 2 years, I’m not sure a Republican will be able to win any race in any state. Now that Republicans have decided that the South is evil, why should people there keep voting for them?
