CINCINNATI (AP) -- A popular southwest Ohio air show has canceled plans to stage a re-enactment of the devastating World War II atomic bomb attack on Japan after protests, officials said Thursday.
Dayton Air Show spokeswoman Brenda Kerfoot said the June 22-23 event at Dayton International Airport will keep a planned "Great Wall of Fire" pyrotechnic show but not as an event meant to re-enact the Aug. 6, 1945, bombing of Hiroshima. The B-29 plane "Fifi," similar to the Enola Gay B-29 bomber used to attack Japan, will remain in the show but in a separate role.
Air show officials said the re-enactment was meant to highlight a historic event that helped end the war and save lives that would have been lost if the war had been prolonged.
"We've taken it as more of an educational show," Kerfoot said. "The wording that we used probably wasn't the best."
She said once critics this week began calling it inappropriate for a family event, the air show decided to separate the B-29 from the pyrotechnic show.
"We didn't want it to become a distraction to the overall quality of the show," she said.
The Dayton Daily News reported that art curator Gabriela Pickett started an online petition to object to the "glamorization of destruction," and said it didn't reflect Dayton's image as a city of peace. Dozens of people around the country signed it.

I don’t know about this glamorization of destruction business, but the idea of a “great wall of fire” reenactment of about 100,000 people being killed seems to be in poor taste.
An excellent movie and I highly recommend it. The films of the explosions had been reworked to bring out all the color from the original film faded with age.
In the ground-level view, right after the cloud lifts, there is a large dark spot briefly visible on the right side of the mushroom stem...that’s a ship flying though the air.
He saw a ship lifted right out of the water. Pointed it out on a map he has of the test ships.
I’ll try to find out the name of it.
"It blowed up REAL GOOD!"
DOZENS across the country signed it, you say?!!
Live, on stage, for one time only...the Hydrogen Bomb!
The power of that explosion is amazing to see. Just look at the size compared to the ships.
I’ve got the Blu-Ray. We watched the documentary in one of my tech schools in the USAF.
When you get a chance, listen to the secondary audio. There are a lot of director’s comments you might find interesting.
Thanks, will do.
Well hell, FiFi isn’t dropping a real atomic bomb.
She’s not dropping anything...it’s buried pyrotechnics...like a movie.
But, we can’t “offend” anybody...so... Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima never happened.
There was a time, in the not so distant past, that the then Confederate, now Commemorative Air Force, would have told the busybodies to pound sand.
In fact they were famous for telling them to mind their own business, that the air show was historically accurate, and the A-Bomb demo was instructive.
I have seen the Miss FiFi A-Bomb demonstration several times, and was always very impressed with the manner of presentation, not to mention the nifty mushroom cloud!
As Rush said today, in reference to another issue, there is a point where “NO!” is the only answer.
Air Show organizers should have said “NO!” And dropped their bomb!
