Did they actually rob a 7-11 or is that just the location where they hijacked the car?
I think they were surprised at the photo release and how quick that the US cops were onto them. They started to make one-star decisions...on the spur of the moment. Staying in the local area...I would admit...was not a great idea. They had some place set-up and felt it was safe until the photos were out.

They apparently freaked out when their pictures were shown. They lived in the area for a over a year, figured the heat was coming and tried desperately to make an escape. They had no escape plan.
If they couldn’t get back to their apartments for their wallets and stuff. They might have robbed the 7-11 to get cash for a run to a safe house.
Obviously they have no money and were hungry. Obviously they have no car, since they hyjacked one. Obviously they have no brains, either.

my guess is, they were desperate for cash trying to get out of dodge, their photos were starting to get stapled to every lamp post on the east coast
....because they needed money?
