The Boy Scouts of America on Friday moved to partially lift its long-standing ban on gays, with a decision that would allow openly gay youth members but continue to bar gay adults in one of the largest youth serving organizations in America.
If the resolution is approved in a nationwide vote in May, "no youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone," Deron Smith, the organization's spokesman, told Reuters.
Gay rights groups want the ban lifted for youth and adults and the proposal immediately drew criticism.
"By refusing to consider an end to its ban on gay and lesbian parents, the Boy Scouts have missed an opportunity to exercise leadership and usher the organization back to relevancy," said Rich Ferraro, Vice President of Communications at GLAAD, which promotes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights.
The resolution is the result of a study Smith called "the most comprehensive listening exercise in the history of Scouting" that found parents in three of four U.S. regions opposed the current membership policy.
While the issue remains divisive, "parents, adults in the Scouting community, and teens alike tend to agree that youth should not be denied the benefits of Scouting," concluded the study, which surveyed members, parents, religious groups and local councils.
"It wasn't very long ago that these guys stood before the Supreme Court and said that denying gays membership was a fundamental cornerstone belief of their organization," Boyle added, citing a 2000 Supreme Court ruling that granted the Boy Scouts the right to uphold their membership policy.

So if it’s wrong for the leaders why is ti OK for the boys?
Camel. Nose. Tent.
Guess the Boy Scout Motto has to be changed .... pronto.
On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.
Good question. It appears the queer lovers tried to strike a middle ground.
How can a queer take a vow to keep his body “morally straight?”
The last paragraph is interesting. Shows how far BSA has fallen in just a few years. This is the fault of the board of directors.
It’ll be ok as long as no one drops the soap.
How do the utes know and who taught them?
You can’t be a little bit pregnant.
My boys will be out if this happens. Too bad.
Now that the Boy Scouts have committed suicide, we need to start a new nondenominational, nonpartisan organization for boys that will prepare them for adulthood and instill in them the moral standards that the BSA once did.
Yep... If this proposal goes through, the Boy Scouts are dead to me.
It was a good, wholesome run.
The Heritage Boys!
If they are so irrelevant, why do you want to be a part of it? Answer that, Nancy Boy.
So, gay-sex with boy scouts will be OK when exactly?
16th B-day? 18th B-day?
The Boy Scout Mgmt is digging themselves a giant whole in which they intend to jump in and commit organizational suicide.
“The Boy Scouts of America on Friday moved to partially lift its long-standing ban on gays,”
That is like giving Obama the right to “register” all guns.
In the early 60’s my troop had a gay guy in it. He wasn’t in your face about it nor a preditor, he was just differnt. As kids do he was just part of the gang. While the rest of us were off hunting and fishing he picked flowers so we called him ‘Posey Picker’. Don’t recall any trouble out of him. He only had a mother and a little brother who was all kid. It was a kind of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ kind of thing.
My thought exactly when I saw the headline.
It’s preposterous to think if they allow boys who are “open” - which ultimately means acting out their sexual “orientation”, give it a few years (or months) and adults will be allowed as leaders. What are they going to do - let someone receive their Eagle Scout and without any change in behavior deny them participation as a leader a day later when they turn 18?
