An interview with a doctor that treated him described those marks on the face and shoulder as scorch marks. Could have been one of the explosives his was chucking at police, a low performance suicide vest of some sort, or a flash bang.

Viewing this picture, there is a major gash in his rib cage. He charged police shooting and throwing bomb(s). Police say they found pipe bombs in his home. It looks like this wound was caused by a large piece of metal fragment. Probably tore the lung, likely cause of death more than bullets, unless the head which is covered in blood was hit.
