In Boston and suburbs, shutdown is surreal (Don't call it Martial Law)

Throughout Boston and its surrounding suburbs — a metro area usually clogged and bustling on a weekday morning — residents found themselves ordered to stay in — or stay out — of their homes Friday morning, as police launched an unprecedented hunt for Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, an immigrant of Chechen origin who grew up in Cambridge and was identified in video footage from the site of Monday’s deadly attack.

The major universities that are the city’s lifeblood shut down. The web of buses and squealing transit cars of the oldest underground subway in the nation ground to a halt. The gleaming skyscrapers with names of insurance companies and banks in downtown Boston were lightly peopled.

Stuck without any transportation, Bostonians watched televised news updates and tracked social media sites at their homes, glancing outside to ponder empty streets and shuttered businesses.

“When big men with guns and bullet proof vests order you to get out, you get out,” said Tim Fiedler, 23, who lives on Norfolk Street, where the Tsarnaev family lives.

A notice from Gov. Deval L. Patrick’s office said residents of Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge, Allston, Brighton and the entire city of Boston should stay indoors.

I can’t believe people are just letting them in their houses to “search”. What’s wrong with those people???

Well, here’s a great reply : We don’t need no more stinkin restrictions on guns, what’s next? Restrictions on pressure cookers?

How about this: Restrict people from invading our country, enforce our existing laws, improve the mental health system, and clean out every gang-infested rat hole including the illegal cartel affiliated illegal aliens.

Pass a law requireing every able bodied responsible person to obtain a gun, and learn how to use it?????

It works for me anyway.

Perhaps they should ask the local post offices how long a complete days routing takes.

Military forces go to great lengths to hide their numbers or convince the enemy they are bigger than they really are. The civilian police bring out everything but the kitchen sink, so eager are they to play with their toys, thus voluntarily ceding a huge strategic edge.

Coming to a major city near you. NYC, Chicago, LA. Detroit, not so much—it already looks like the aftermath of a war.

This is happening more and more. There is an accident with fatalities on a major highway near me and they shut down the entire freakin highway for hours. There is a protest in the city and the police shut down blocks around it. I appreciate that the police have a hard job and are trying to protect the population, but it is overkill.

It’s not overkill. It’s thugs showing whose “turf” we live on.

“Never let a crisis go to waste” The police view this as: PRACTICE.

And OVERTIME.

Is door to door warrentless searches by military police, Federal ATF, SWAT, and Watertown police in keeping with the 4th ammendment?

Probably they are good. Nobody can deny that they have a good reason to locate the fugitive. They probably have a warrant that says "Search for this guy anywhere within Boston and suburbs" - and that warrant is good enough at this time. (Nobody can be expected to do better.)

What records are they keeping? This guy had a gun? This guy had drug paraphenalia on his coffee table?

That shouldn't be a concern for two reasons.

Legally, they are searching for a specific man. This warrant says nothing about searching premises for drugs or firearms. The plain view doctrine still may be used, however, because the visit by the LEO would be otherwise lawful.

But practically, they cannot stop and arrest people for minor violations. The police doesn't have enough resources as they are to search the whole city. Just imagine what would the police commanders be screaming into their radios if their officers start wasting their time citing people for $100 warrants or for a gram or two of pot while the mass murderer is making his escape. I don't think SWAT teams are even set up to run subjects and to do investigations on the spot. It's a job of a beat cop.

Thanks, I don't doubt LEO’s are operating under extreme circumstances, but I wonder where the precedent will rear it's head in the future. Perhaps they would have been better off to declare martial law, then even the use of Military assets in an Urban US area would have seemed less like a incursion on the Constitution.

Here is an interesting event that happened last night that I bet you never heard of!!!

A bill passed late last night (93-7 votes) that declares the entire United States of America a battleground. Read here to see what this means to Americans

“I wonder where the precedent will rear it’s head in the future”

The first place will be in higher federal taxes to pay for all cities to respond in this fashion to an event like this.

Someone tried this in my area- with many armed citizens- he’d never make it out alive. And no one would miss a day of work.

As far as fatal accidents go; the issue with them is the liability of lawsuits against the State or other agency and all other lawsuits that possibly could be filed means a major investigation must take place at the scene of major car accidents. Back in the day it was a matter of loading up victims in ambulances and wreckers clearing the road, accident would be cleared in no time. Another issue is even if part of the road could remain open it has to be closed as well because many people are too stupid to navigate through without causing more accidents or running over emergency personnel. Lookie-loos cause issues even in oncoming lanes as well.

“Pass a law requireing every able bodied responsible person to obtain a gun, and learn how to use it?”

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State..”

That principle was pretty well recognized in the Bill of Rights. That principle was forgotten along with Jefferson’s suspicion of Standing Armies during Times of Peace in the Declaration. Thus ends the “free State”.

How about this: Restrict people from invading our country, enforce our existing laws, improve the mental health system, and clean out every gang-infested rat hole including the illegal cartel affiliated illegal aliens.

It would take a strongman, and that strongman would have to come to power via force because the majority of the country wants to vote for girlie men and bask in hope and change while living on someone else's dime. That majority is not overwhelming, but - as the last election demonstrated - it is sufficient.

Once that strongman comes to power he will definitely close the borders, and he will hang all the criminals, and he will make trains run on time. He will also do other things - things that you wouldn't be that happy about, but you would have no power. That's how most dictators come to power - on the wave of popular displeasure with pathetic, impotent and corrupt "elected" government (who, in reality, elects themselves.)

It's nice to dream about a benevolent dictator; about someone who has the power to make things right *and* the will to do so, and the honesty to not abuse the power. Such people are known in history, but they are rare.
