Federal law enforcement officials are actively investigating the possibility that the Boston bombers were known to the government’s terror-trackers, MailOnline understands.

Any inquiry into the marathon bombing will look into whether agents could have taken action – but didn’t – to prevent the Tsarnaev brothers from obtaining the explosives that killed 3 and wounded 173 others.

CBS News reported Friday evening that two years ago, the FBI interviewed the elder brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed in Thursday night's dramatic shootout. The feds reportedly spoke to him at the request of an unspecified foreign government, but couldn't establish that he had ties to terrorist radicals.

Tamerlan left the United States in January 2012 for Russia and returned in mid-July, according to records uncovered by NBC in New York.

But an official inside the Department of Homeland Security with knowledge of federal law enforcement activities in Massachusetts has claimed to MailOnline that Tamerlan was on the radar screen of agents in Boston between his return to the U.S. and the end of the fall.

A second source, formerly assigned to a U.S. JTTF, confirmed to MailOnline that ‘there is some very quiet discussion in the Boston JTTF about this.’

The Homeland Security source told MailOnline that the FBI in Boston now believes Tamerlan was receiving assistance from an 'organized radical element' in Massachusetts. And agents are now reviewing at least one report from inside a mosque to see if they can identify Tamerlan’s associates in Boston's Muslim community.

Law enforcement at the federal level has 'practically nothing' on Dzhokhar, Tamerlan's younger brother,that source claimed.

WASHINGTON — The FBI and other law enforcement agencies were aware of at least one of the Boston terror suspects for several years, and even failed to deport him after a domestic violence conviction in 2009.

The FBI in 2011 interviewed one of the brothers suspected in the deadly Boston Marathon bombings, a disclosure that raises questions about whether the government missed potential warning signs about the men’s behavior.

The brothers had not been under surveillance as possible militants, U.S. government officials said. But the FBI said in a statement on Friday that in 2011 it interviewed Tamerlan at the request of a foreign government, which it did not identify.

It’s hard to believe that these 2 were not known and atleast recognizable by that bunch of young Saudis whose pictures have been all over this board the last week. They were all the same age and must have comingled at the Menino Mosque which is run by Saudi imams and with Saudi money.

It is well known that there is a Saudi connection to Chechniya. The Saudis have the money and the Chechens have the willing manpower.

My turn to get picky and absurd. The Government ordered by part numbers and by NSNs (National Stock Number) and not ammunition. Hey Joe sell me a nuclear bomb and a ammunition?

The real question is whether DHS or the FBI had a information about a potential terrorist attack and didn't share that info with the local police. They may have been watching Tamerlan Tsarnaev but not put the pieces together in time to stop him.

It was the RUSSIANS who asked us to take a close look at the elder bomber. They knew who he was, gave us a heads up, as he would be an enemy of both the US and Russia. What do we do? Clear him and then don’t follow up.

And it turns out that their encounter with the police Thursday night was accidental. They would still not have known without that 7 Eleven incident.

Thanks for posting this. This is the clearest indictment I have yet seen of the incompetence and negligence of the US government. They did a cursory look into this guy and either did not look for, or ignored, his connections to a radical islamic mosque and his postings on social media and youtube that should have set off alarm bells of his radical learnings. That information, coupled with the tip-off by Russia, should have been sufficient to obtain warrants and/or conduct surveillance. How many more Americans are going to die because of politically motivated wilful blindness by those in government who are supposed to be protecting America?

This is what I don't get. How could the Feds NOT know who they were. When someone immigrates they get photographed, printed, biometrics taken ...not once but repeatedly. They could have run face recognition through the system and come up with a match easily in those days after the bombing. This doesn't pass the smell test.
