Boat Where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Hid 'Looked Like Swiss Cheese' After Shootout

Boat Where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Hid 'Looked Like Swiss Cheese' After Shootout Tsarnaev was found when Watertown man looked underneath tarpaulin and found the Boston bombing suspect inside

Adam Gabbatt 20 April 2013 The boat that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found hiding in looked like "Swiss cheese" after the Boston bombing suspect's shootout with police, the boat's owner told neighbours.

Tsarnaev was taken into custody after a Watertown resident, named locally as David Henneberry, went to check on his boat and found Tsarnaev inside. Swat teams moved in and a gun fight ensued, resulting in Tsarnaev being captured. He is in hospital in a serious condition.

On Saturday, Henneberry was being hailed as the man who helped end a tense 22-hour manhunt, which, until his phone call to police, had been fruitless.

But it came at a cost. The boat – a source of immense pride for the owner, according to local residents – was no longer seaworthy, being, as it was, riddled with bullet holes.

"He said the boat was like Swiss cheese," said one neighbour, who did not want to give her name but lived a few doors down from the boat owner.

The resident said she had spoken to Henneberry on Friday night, after police had taken away the suspect.

Apparently the SWAT teams had taken control of the neighbor's house adjacent to the home where the boat was located.

Rebecca Heavey, 29, lives in the house behind where Tsarnaev was found. Her backyard is adjacent to where the boat was stored. She described the drama as authorities swarmed over her garden to get to Tsarnaev.

"I just saw all the Swat teams in our backyard with their guns drawn," she said. "We were crawling on our elbows through the house, trying to find a safe place. Our doorbell was ringing and we didn't know who it was, we couldn't see the police. We were terrified."

You can see that boat on Bing Maps down at the elbow of Franklin St in Watertown, MA.

They better buy that man a new boat AND give him a sizeable reward.

My 1 question, if the boat looked like swiss cheese after they were done, WHY was this effer still alive?

That’s fiberglass for you. The key is where did the rounds go after they went sailing through the boat? They will be finding holes all over that neighborhood for quite some time.

I’ve heard there is a Facebook effort to raise money to buy the guy a new boat. Wish I could find the page.

Swat teams moved in and a gun fight ensued,...

Bullet holes usually do result when there's a gun fight. I sure hope no one is blaming the Swat team for returning fire after being fired upon. Personally, if you're dumb enough to shoot at law enforcement people, you just gave up your rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

I just heard on the radio that donations are pouring in to this guy for his boat!

I don’t think the boat owner’s insurance covers this. IIRC, there’s a rider on non-coverage for terrorism. Stinks for them.

That is a very nice gesture....however, those who shot up his boat should be the ones pooling their money together to buy him a new one.

With all those shots and the bastard still lives?

Haven’t been on FB in a while. I’ll hop on to see if I can find it for you.

Judging from the radio traffic, local/state law enforcement (unlike Holder, Napolitano and Obama—not that they'd actually admit that outside their small inside circle) wanted to take him alive. Using infrared (body heat shows up in infrared) they could tell where he was located.

Don't assume all the swiss cheese holes were caused by “incoming” law enforcement fire. This dumb ass was shooting in the blind, through the boat, without sticking his head out.

Yeah - blanks and rubber bullets - to try to get the suspect to exhaust his own ammo. (Eye roll)

The boat should have been splintered like the bodies this creep and his brother left in the wake of their bombings.

The boat might be worth a small fortune to someone who collects historical hardware

Terrorism wasn’t responsible, the cops were. Was this the way they planned to take him alive? Seriously? They could’ve fired tear gas into the boat, for heaven’s sake.

Convince me there aren’t those who hope this kid never utters a word.

Aw c’mon, I doubt that the boat was like swiss cheese. They wanted the guy alive and they did.

Nah, too dramatic a report.

Much has been said about that MIT cop as a “hero”. All he did was sit in his vehicle and be assassinated. Tragic, yes, but the real hero is David Henneberry who had the balls to walk up to his boat, look inside, risk being shot.
