Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform (March 19, 2013 Article)

WASHINGTON — Sen. Rand Paul is calling for conservatives to embrace the cause of immigration reform, outlining a proposal that would grant some form of legal status to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants after the federal government has certified that the border is secure.

Paul’s proposal, outlined in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Washington on Tuesday, carefully avoided the term citizenship. Instead, the Kentucky senator said he sought a middle ground that would include a multi-year process of granting visas to undocumented workers that would hinge on the annual verification of the security of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Paul echoed the key finding of an internal review from the Republican National Committee that called for the party to recast its image in order to attract minority voters, saying the GOP must change the perception of the party as anti-immigrant.

Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but “Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration.”

Stupidity runs in the family.

I have said a Libertarian is a Republican with no balls and who can be swayed with the wind.

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Try setting up an "Anglo-American Chamber of Commerce" somewhere and see how far you get, and how many Senators would come to speak to it.

I had high hopes for Rand, it's sickening to see him sell out and hop aboard the "Viva La Raza!" panderfest bandwagon.

They will never be a natural constituency for the GOP. Why do they keep saying that?

Wishful thinking, desperation, and political correctness, that's why.

Only a deluded fool could really believe that a group of people characterized by low income, low levels of education/skills, and a culture of dependency (on welfare, "bilingual" education programs, and affirmative action) will magically become GOP voters if only Republicans embraced amnesty and open borders.

Repeating mantras about "natural conservatives" doesn't make these PC delusions any more real.

Secure our borders - Defend our Constitution!

FR is funded solely by the freedom loving folks who love and use it.

I will play devil's advocate on this one for a change.

Now mind you I'm not sure about this, but here is what I think he's doing.

Perhaps he knows full well that demanding a secure border before any citizenship or amnesty will be the poison pill that prevents any bill from passing.

Then the GOP can claim it tried in good faith but the Dems refused to secure the border.

Don't flame me, I'm just interested to see if I'm being unreasonably hopeful or if it is plausible.

Uh, wasn’t it lax immigration policies that lead to Boston? Talk about bad timing. The open border crowd has been thoroughly discredited.

Hey Rand! The only immigration reform I will support is to have the border secured, and those who came to the U.S. illegally sent home packing, along with their offspring. Illegal is illegal is illegal. You politicians need to start adhering to the laws of this country, and making others do the same.

My grandfather was an illegal immigrant. He never voted, never took welfare or socialist security, never broke other laws. The immigration laws of our country have always been arbitrary and selectively enforced, a situation that has been brutally exploited more so by citizens than by aliens. Our immigration laws and bureaucracy are self defeating travesties the biggest obstacles to securing the borders.

Now I fear we will self destruct politically over it.
