Internet Sales Tax Bill On Fast Track In Senate
Freedom Outpost ^ | Apr. 23, 2013 | Tim Brown

Posted on 04/23/2013 7:47:35 AM PDT by EXCH54FE

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has an internet sales tax bill on a fast track. That’s right, these Socialists never sleep. They are out to squeeze every penny from the American people that they can. The Marketplace Fairness Act (Ironically, this is anything but fairness) may receive a vote on the Senate floor this week and since it’s after your money it has Barack Obama’s full support. The MFA calls upon states to join the existing Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement or follow what are essentially five rules: Notify retailers in advance of any rate changes within the state Designate a single state organization to handle sales tax registrations, filings, and audits Establish a uniform sales tax base for use throughout the state Use destination sourcing to determine sales tax rates for out-of-state purchases (a purchase made by a consumer in California from a retailer in Ohio is taxed at the California rate, and the sales tax collected is remitted to California to fund projects and services there) Provide free software for managing sales tax compliance, and hold retailers harmless for any errors that result from relying on state-provided systems and data

The Wall Street Journal reports,

The text of this legislation, which would fundamentally change interstate commerce, only became available on the Library of Congress website over the weekend. And you thought ObamaCare was jammed through Nancy Pelosi’s Democratic House in a hurry.

For Senators curious about what they’re voting on, it is the same flawed proposal that Mike Enzi (R., Wyo.) introduced in February. It has been repackaged to qualify for a Senate rule that allows Majority Leader Harry Reid to bypass committee debate and bring it straight to the floor.

I would think that the unintended consequences of this is that the kids that make under $200,000 will finally realize that their taxes went up and that Obama lied.

That hopey changey thing again. A big tax and spend Chicago thug gets two terms as POTUS. The people living in this country deserve everything that their politicians do to them. Elections do have consequences.

So if you live in a state without a sales tax, and you buy something online from a state that has a sales tax; will you pay the sales tax?

A few comments fwd to BOTH our Sens today:

*****************

As it appears the Senate rules have been circumvented, as this bill was brought to the floor without any real examination, discussion or markup via the committee processes. This legislation is like a spider-web filled with dangerous flaws. In a manner of speaking-- You are voting to uphold the lately flagging integrity of the Senate.

The vibrant online retail & sales market is the only strong flow of consumer purchasing in the larger scheme of the entire US economy.

And all the liberal Democrats can think about is TAX TAX TAX TAX... because they have already accomplished the SPEND SPEND SPEND -- and they are in huge deficit trouble. There are no bounds to their hubris, ambition and greed.

You must take up the shield of courageous common sense once again, and move forward as a key leader in opposing Obama's next version of the BIG GOVERNMENT GAME-"GRABBING FOR DOLLARS".

The American people are slowly wakening to the bubblegum and baling-wire logic of Keynesian economics. The left continues to attempt to build a chicken-coop with balsa wood in a forty-knot gale. They just grab the next possibility and try to nail it down.

I agree, kill this in Senate.

I dont see any reason Bohner would have to put this up for a vote. What group of voters supports this??

Except the campaign bribes they are getting from big business, err job creators as they were called last year.

Mike Enzi is a moderate up for reelection next year. He needs to go! I hope Liz Cheney does run against him to get him out of office!

Most internet retailers sell/ship their products FOB shipping point. Legally that means that the ownership transfer occurs in the shipping point’s state......
most of which have been located in low tax rate/no tax rate states. (Cabalas has a store in Nevada, just across the California state line, to avoid California’s punitive business policies.)

For the Feds to apply a federal sales tax to all interstate transactions would spell disaster for all forms of interstate transactions.....

Can anyone say “Tax and Spend?” Seems like Democrat policy being pursued in the Senate.....never get pass the House.....course ya never know nowadays!

***Provide free software for managing sales tax compliance, and hold retailers harmless for any errors that result from relying on state-provided systems and data***

I’m sure they’ll be glad to provide free software to further fleece the consumer.

But the only ‘errors’ the state won’t hold them accountable for are those that benefit the state. Otherwise, rest assured those mistakes that benefit retailers will put them in hot water fast I’m sure.

I am afraid both sides probably support this bill.

Hard to get opposition to taxing Internet.

It will pass and become law.

Correct. This bill is changing the terms of the contract between two private parties. It is, in reality, no different than California setting up revenue agents on the Nevada border to collect a use tax on goods purchased in Nevada and brought into California by their residents.

It also has no business originating in the senate. If the House had any brains, it would simply return the bill to the senate with no comment other than "this legislation is out of your jurisdiction and cannot be acted upon."

Or, they could have a little fun and demand that any senate confirmations be sent to the House to be voted upon.

Look for distribution centers to move to China,Canada and Mexico.

Then the same f’rs that passed this will blame the businesses and the crony capitalists (Amazon, Best Buy,etc favoring this) will blame the gubbamint.
