I read elsewhere the city was also going to give them a new truck. But they declined. They woulda had to pay the taxes on the truck.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The city of Los Angeles reached a $4.2 million settlement on injury claims by two women who were injured when police mistakenly opened fire on them during the manhunt for disgruntled ex-cop Christopher Dorner, an official said Tuesday.
City Attorney Carmen Trutanich announced the sum to KNBC-TV Los Angeles, and an attorney representing the women confirmed the amount to The Associated Press.
The settlement must still be approved by the Los Angeles City Council.
Margie Carranza and her 71-year-old mother, Emma Hernandez, were delivering papers around 5 a.m. on Feb. 7 when LAPD officers blasted at least 100 rounds at their pickup.
Hernandez was shot in the back and Carranza had minor injuries.

It would have been fair for the city (i.e., the taxpayers) to pay all of their medical bills and buy them a new truck, including the sales tax, property tax, insurance, and registration fees. However, that’s it. Anything more than that is a shakedown—paid for, of course, by those of us who earn our own way and pay an extortionate amount of taxes to fund such windfalls.
Now, if the LAPD would just fire the trigger-happy, color blind morons who shot up the truck...

That's the whole problem. The ones who are the responsible parties in these events are never held to account, it's always the taxpayers.
These perps need to be hit where it hurts, and these ladies to deserve a little "extra" beside medical and a new truck, imo.
