Rhode Island set to be 10th state to pass same-sex marriage

Rhode Island was set to become the 10th U.S. state to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples after the state Senate approved a gay marriage bill on Wednesday, in a major victory for gay rights activists.

The state House had approved a similar measure in January, but the bill will now go back to the House for a new vote because it was amended. Gordon Fox, the speaker of the House, said in a statement that he will schedule that vote for May 2.

"Pending the final vote by the House of Representatives, Rhode Island will no longer be an outlier in our region," Governor Lincoln Chafee, an independent, said in a statement.

"We will have the welcome mat out. We will be open for business, and we will once again affirm our legacy as a place that is tolerant and appreciative of diversity."

Rhode Island, which allows civil unions, is the last New England state without a law allowing gay nuptials, and Wednesday's vote marks the latest in a string of victories for gay marriage advocates.

Now met with a ho-hum. I bet they don’t have a dozen this year and half of that next year.

With gay marriage comes gay divorce. And they are ugly things.

You’ll notice it didn’t pass a popular vote. It’s only done that in one state IIRC

I hope the conservatives in the state — however many are left — toss those legislators out of office.

I think reports of such personages have been great exaggerated.

Rhodent Island. Not much middle meat for the Mass-Conn sandwich. Oh wait, didn’t Teddy K and Odd Dodd once have a waitress sandwich? She must have been from Rhodent Isle.

They can say they’re married, but they should realize the rest of us are laughing our asses off at two guys or two girls playing “let’s get married”.

It’s a cheap stand-up comedy bit.

They are a huge JOKE...pitiful

I think diversity as the reason is BS; it’s really about perverts, presidential models, blackmail and under the table bags of illuminati money.

that’s too bad. We used to have at least some lunch-bucket blue collar conservatives in the predominately liberal states of New England.
