Brazile: Bush kept word on Katrina
CNN ^ | April 25, 2013 | Donna Brazile

(CNN) -- Despite the many differences I had with former President George W. Bush on a range of public policy issues, or as he called them, "decision points," I found common ground with him in one area, simply because we decided to put aside partisanship and do something good.

Hurricane Katrina's devastation and the bungled rescue efforts are seared in the national memory. Bush's "heckuva job" remark turned into a byword for government incompetence and public distrust. The shallowness of it coming at such a terrible and low point left deep wounds that are still healing. That was what it was.

But rather than rehash all that went wrong, I want to share what I believe to have been President Bush's determination to follow up on commitments, and the intense, personal, dedicated efforts he made to revive and restore people's futures. I know what I'm talking about.

Calvin Coolidge kinda did the opposite.

The Hurricane Katrina of the Coolidge years, the great Mississippi River flood of 1927, wiped out many areas of the South. Yet Coolidge pointedly chose not to visit the devastated areas—sending Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover in his place—out of concern that a presidential visit might encourage the idea of federal spending on disaster relief, for which there were already advocates in Congress. This triggered resentment, which Senator Thaddeus Caraway of Arkansas expressed in personal terms: “I venture to say that if a similar disaster had affected New England the President would have had no hesitation in calling an extra session. Unfortunately he was unable to visualize the situation.” But soon thereafter floods tore across Vermont, the state where Coolidge had spent his childhood, and calls for him to visit grew loud—to no avail. “He can’t do for his own, you see, more than he did for the others,” as one Vermonter explained. Vermont, like Arkansas, would have to recover without federal intervention.

Brazile is liberal and partisan but every once in a while, she surprises you with her opinions.

But she had no problem bashing him at the time it happened.

Correct. So now, at this late date, I have to say to her, "What difference, at this time, does it make?!?"

We’ll see the same thing happen down the road that we saw when Reagan passed.

The same Democrats that said nasty things about Reagan when he was President, praised him and whined about how Reagan wouldn’t be accepted in today’s Republican Party...yadda yadda yadda....The exact same thing will happen with Bush, I guarantee it.

The sheeple don't understand that the federal government is supposed to provide a supporting role to state and local government in times of disaster, not be the lead agency when a local government still exists. What is amazing is how having a democratic governor go fetal position, and a mayor bury his head in a pile of coke somehow becomes the republican's fault.

The Democrats knew Bush was right, but they couldn’t pass up an opportunity to proclaim to the low-information voters that “Bush Hates Black People”.

Sorry, not buying it. A vicious, hateful racist and sexist tries to make nice without any apologies (known to me, anyway) for her years of outspoken hatred?

Nice words, but from someone who made herself dead to me.

I’ve read some very nice, admiring comments she made about Justice Clarence Thomas in the past too! Every once in awhile, she’s the “blind squirrel that finds a nut”!

Meanwhile, people are still waiting for recovery from Sandy, a much less powerful storm. And nobody has said a bad thing about Obama, who promised the world and got away with it, while offering little help.

I wish the worst possible fate for Kanye West.

Exposed as a gay lipsync artist who perishes from embarrassment not long after exposure?
