Senators Quietly Seeking New Path on Gun Control
NY Times ^ | Apr. 25, 2013 | JEREMY W. PETERS

Talks to revive gun control legislation are quietly under way on Capitol Hill as a bipartisan group of senators seeks a way to bridge the differences that led to last week’s collapse of the most serious effort to overhaul the country’s gun laws in 20 years.

Drawing on the lessons from battles in the 1980s and ’90s over the Brady Bill, which failed in Congress several times before ultimately passing, gun control supporters believe they can prevail by working on a two-pronged strategy. First, they are identifying senators who might be willing to change their votes and support a background check system with fewer loopholes.

Second, they are looking to build a national campaign that would better harness overwhelming public support for universal background checks — which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval — to pressure lawmakers.

Senators Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, and Patrick J. Toomey, Republican of Pennsylvania, have been talking in recent days about how they could persuade more senators to support their bill to expand background checks for gun buyers, which drew backing from only four Republicans last week.

“We’re going to work it hard,” Mr. Manchin said Thursday, adding that he was looking at tweaking the language of his bill in a way that he believed would satisfy senators who, for example, felt that background checks on person-to-person gun sales would be too onerous for people who live in rural areas far from a sporting goods store.

Those concerns were an issue for Alaska’s senators, Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, and Mark Begich, a Democrat.

Keep it up! The American people do not trust you bastards. You will only increase donations to the NRA along with gun and ammo sales.

I have had it with Pat Toomey. Hoped for years for him to finally get elected to the Senate from PA. WHAT a FREAKING DISAPPOINTMENT he has been. He must be primaried OUT! IF only we can find someone who can beat him! I am sure he’s been promised the moon by the dems he’s working with. TRAITOR to the rural Pennsylvanians who elected him!

“overwhelming public support for universal background checks — which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval”

Ignorant approval is not impressive. Most probably have no clue what the ramifications of such a system would be to their liberties.

Many people are in favor of background checks, but the devil is in the details.

Most who favor such checks do not realize the language of such bills will give the government the POWER to declare the people to be criminals in their own homes.

But then the pollsters never tell you that when they ask “Do you favor the background check bill before Congress now?”

How about an open season, where can I get my license??

Louisiana. They have very recently passed a lifetime permit and the resteraunt carry bil (both stories on FR). They are really on a roll getting out in front of the gun grabbers.

The medium is the message.

“look we are working”

It is the issue not the solution.

Don’t use logic to analyze this.

Think propaganda tools.

Obama must really be throwing a hissy fit. I can imagine the threats that he is making against the 4 senators who helped defeat the bill. Harry Reid is probably drinking Mylanta by the gallon.

But at least they have good ol’ dependable John McCain and Lindsey Graham to back them up by added to the pressure.

Schumer, Biden, McCain, et al. Tooling-Up for Another Spree Killing? Posted on April 26, 2013 by Robert Farago “Two top senators predicted Thursday that gun legislation will come up again for a Senate vote – possibly before the end of the year – as public attitudes shift toward stricter controls,” latimes.com reports. And why would public opinion shift towards gun control? Especially as they’re currently shifting in the other direction. Methinks Senator Schumer and his Republican BFF are anticipating another bloodletting. “I think we’re going to bring this bill back before the end of the year and I think you may find some changes,” Chuck pronounced at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. “Lots of senators who thought it was safe to vote against it are not so sure any more.” Right. “Because of changing attitudes.” Now, guess the ID of the other Senator predicting Gun Control 2.0 . . . The hatred of the Constitution is now a 24/7 job for the left. Which means we need to be on guard 24/7.

Meaning secretly, behind closed doors, without debate?

How does mccain stand on the lack of debate here?

overwhelming public support for universal background checks, which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval — to pressure lawmakers.

L - I - E.

Actually, TWO lies.

There was ONE poll (lie #1) and it never asked that question (lie#2).

It contained a vague question regarding only background checks.

38. Do you support or oppose requiring background checks for all gun buyers?

"Universal background checks" are NOT background checks.

What the neo-communists want with "Universal background checks" is a cross-linked database that includes medical records, prescription drug records, Military service records, credit scores, grade school and college records, school "resource officers" records, civil judgments, employee drug testing, etc, etc.

Essentially, any scrap of data that can be tied to you. At that point the benevolent shepards in our "most transparent" administration will set the sell / no sell bar as they see fit.

That is not the straightforward "do you have a felony conviction" check.

And the 90% figure?

They are referring to the Quinnipiac University poll from Feb, 2013.

It is a twisting of what was actually asked.

Yeah, I know, SHOCKING, right?

February 7, 2013 - Americans Back Women In Combat 3-1, But Less For Draft, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Support For Universal Gun Background Checks Is 92%

http://www.quinnipiac.edu/institutes-centers/polling-institute/national/release-detail/?ReleaseID=1847

Demographics...

http://www.quinnipiac.edu/images/polling/us/us02072013_demos.doc

The questions...

http://www.quinnipiac.edu/images/polling/us/us02072013.doc

PDF format
http://www.quinnipiac.edu/images/polling/us/us02072013.pdf

What is glaringly obvious by it’s absence is the exact description of what comprises a “universal background check” because it never did ask that question.

It also does not differentiate between a private sale and a FFL sale when referring to “gun buyers.”

Here is the actual question...38. Do you support or oppose requiring background checks for all gun buyers?

So of course the question is vague in that it only says “background checks.”

NOT universal background checks.

But when it comes out of the neo-communists’ mouth it has transformed into...

SUPPORT FOR UNIVERSAL GUN BACKGROUND CHECKS IS 92%

Umm, no, that is NOT the question that was asked.

Quinnipiac University Polling Institute... Anti-American Citizens rights groups, New York Times, you LIE.

One more thing...

how about a federal reciprocity law just like DL licenses.

I would love it but until there are uniform requirements in all states(training, back ground check procedures etc), it won't happen. Besides CA, IL, NY etc.....would never go for it.

I live in SC where we don't have reciprocity in neighboring Georgia. In order for me to be able to legally carry concealed in Georgia (and other many other states), I have to get my permit in Florida and pay $55. It's a real PITA for those of us who want to travel through these states to get to a destination that SC doesn't have reciprosity with.

Just who keeps electing and reelecting these anti-American, anti-Constitution degenerates (AKA: senators)? At best they should be imprisoned for going against their oaths to defend the Constitution.

I support background checks and drug testing for all immigration candidates and welfare recipients.

If you have a bad record of any kind in your country of origin, or if you turn up as a “person of interest” in an interpol or Mossad inquiry, no immigration visa for you.

If you fail a drug test or have a medically reported drug or alcohol problem, no welfare for you.

If you are not a US citizen, no welfare for you, either.
