Non-citizen immigrants lawfully residing in California would be eligible for jury duty under a bill that cleared the Assembly on Thursday.

Current state law allows only United States citizens to serve on juries. However, the state Constitution does not restrict immigrants residing legally in California from being summoned. Assembly Bill 1401 would no longer exclude "lawfully present immigrants" from jury lists drawn in part by the Department of Motor Vehicles records. The bill was written by seven Democrats on the Assembly Judiciary Committee, including the chairman, Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont.

I’ve always said that the justice system in this country was a joke. The commie left just “doubled down” on it being a big joke.

Should be found unconstitutional in time.

More wasted money on the part of Californians with daffy, not to say idiotic, ideas.

I was called to serve on jury duty twice while I lived in that absolute sewer of a state.

In all honesty, I didn't see how it could get any worse. I was wrong.

We're getting very close to them legally being allowed to vote in our general elections and even running for President.

Oops, the latter has already been established. Obama has set that precedence.

*I'm not claiming that Obama was not born in the US nor do I claim he's not a US Citizen. The mere fact that he denied us the proof which even John McCain was demanded to provide was all that was needed to set the new process of electing our President. Personally, I think that was his only objective from the beginning. I always thought that.

RE: I lived in that absolute sewer of a state.

And which state in this great country is that?

I say go with it and help the demise of this state. We can’t beat ‘em but we can help create chaos within.

By when? When non-citizen immigrants will also be allowed to be judges in this country? They're already eligible to be President. See post 7.

Once the GOP helps pass illegal alien amnesty this will be happening all over America. Enjoy all.

Hey, they’re just wanting a jury of their peers.

I wonder if they need to pass an English literacy test, or if taxpayers need to pay for translators in every courtroom. California has illegals from around the world so there could be several languages in need of translation.

Cluster ...

Hopefully ... as an illegal alien would undermine the legal principle of a "jury of one's peers".

But of course the Left -- and sadly some Republicans who should know better -- is working tirelessly to require government and the legal system to recognize no substantive difference between a U.S. citizen and an illegal alien ... which they describe as "regularization" of illegal aliens.

I call it the Court system. We no longer have a justice system. We have been in probate court now for over 2 years and believe me there is no justice.
And if I was ever on trial I would contest this law because they are NOT a ‘jury of peers’.

I just finished serving on a jury in SoCal.
They summons anyone who has a CA drivers license. Citizen or not. You have to swear you are a citizen..so you could lie and serve now. They also don’t ever ask you to verify you are the person on the summons. No ID is asked during the process...so I guess we could have non-citizens and illegals serving now.
