California Proposes Soda Tax to Defray Costs of Obesity and Dental Disease
yahoo ^ | april 25, 2013 | Sylvia Cochran

California Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, proposes a penny-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks. KGO-TVreports that his controversial bill is currently on its way to the senate's Health Committee for discussion.

How much more expensive would a can of soda be if the tax goes into effect?

The price of each can of sweetened soda would increase by 12 cents.

Which types of beverages will this law affect?

As noted in SB-622, this tax affects all "bottled sweetened beverages" as well as concentrates if they contain more than 25 calories for every 12 ounces of content. Fruit and vegetable juices may also be affected when their natural fruit or vegetable content falls below 50 percent. Furthermore, this tax affects sports drinks, energy drinks and sweetened iced teas.

Which beverages are exempted?

Among the exemptions are concentrates of milk products and those containing "more than 50 percent natural fruit juice" or natural vegetables juice. A provision to exempt plant protein sources as a concentrate was taken out by lawmakers.

What happens to the money the state collects because of the California soda tax?

Monning proposes the creation of a "Children's Health Promotion Fund." The money may be spent on activities that prevent childhood obesity statewide. Examples include educational materials, policy making and public health campaigns. Some of the money would also benefit school nutrition programs, hiring of and training for physical education teachers and the construction of school facilities for recreational activities.

Why are they paying for welfare dental, anyway? If a person is obese, then it is their fault. The State should be grateful. They die early, anyway.

For crying out loud! This is what you can expect from a government that has become too gargantuan. Since the state is supporting a very large portion of the population, it feels compelled to dictate how their charges are to live.

Where does the line get drawn? Ultimately, with zero population.....that is where.

This is the final solution!

The sales tax in CA is 8 to 10%, depending upon the county and city. So, of course the 12 cents on a 12 oz. container will be subject to sales tax, thus making the total cost 13 cents per 12 oz.

Don’t you just love these CA hack pols. A few years ago, when they decided that gasoline would be subject to the state sales tax even though CA has a high per gallon tax. They made the sales tax applicable to the cost of a gallon of gas INCLUDING the state gas tax amount. A tax on a tax??? Hey, no problem. This is California - the land of high taxes, fruits and nuts, and dumb crooked politicians.

What ever happened to the tobacco tax Rob Reiner proposed to go to a children's health fund?

Is the tax doing what liberals said it would (cut down on the number of smokers) and so reducing the amount of money flowing to the fund, so they need more taxes to keep spending up? Is whatever their "funding" not working? Or do libs just want more money to spend?

Hey, Robby! I got an idea: tax movie theater tickets. Think you'd go for that one?

I have an idea, let them use the money they’re currently using to subsidize high fructose corn syrup.

The ultimate goal is to have all the production and delivery of food and drink in the hands of the government. This is a baby step towards their dream.

The problem is,once they urinate in their own bed, they leave for new pastures, but take their stinking liberal mindsets with them to ruin the new place.

It will, of course, go straight to the general fund and disappear...

Go ahead, People’s Democratic Republic of California, tax yourself out of existence. I will do everything in my power to make sure my Congresscritters prevent an Federal Aid getting to you when you go bankrupt!

Anyone remember the Robin Williams movie POPEYE?

One of the themes of the movie was a tax collector who had a tax for everything anyone would do. This is the world Democrats want for us.

Socialism cost money. Rather than make any cuts socialist seek to find a new source of money (and always for the children or for our own good).

As someone who lives in California I say to the tax and spend Democrats go for it. But why stop at such a small tax, go for the gold, tax income at 100%.

All revolutions come down to a government that becomes out of touch with the common folks. The left in this nation today live in a bubble. Most are along the cost and in big cities. They do not know any conservatives. They believe their own propaganda.

Even if 100% of the population support what the left is doing (and I do not think it is anywhere near that level) it is unsustainable. The more they take from those that produce to give to those that do not will eventually result in less to the government. It is human nature and people will find a way around the rules, regulations or taxes, perhaps going Galt.

I seldom make predictions, but this is such a sure thing. If they do impose this special tax, they will not bring in anywhere near the amount they think they will bring in.

Penny per ounce. That's nearly .68 on a 2 liter bottle. Not insignificant.
