I'd like to call your attention to the fact that Indianapolis has only 2 really bad neighborhoods in this list ~ which is good. Also, my old home ZIP CODE isn't one of them ~ which is also really good ~ a good thing actually ~ a Martha Stewart good thing. It used to get ranked regularly as the worst in the Midwest ~ now you can look to Detroit for that factoid.

My travels with the Postal Service took me to every single one of these really bad neighborhoods where I would end up actually being on the streets at 2 AM (After work) and sometimes looking for an open restaurant on foot. There's always one the criminal elite hang out at ~ usually chili ~ sometimes spaghetti ~ the only time I was ever shot at was on College Avenue just North of Washington Street ~ hillbillies on both sides of the street decided to have a shootout as I drove through.

All in all I"d say America is getting more stable, if not better ~ all these places were bad then, they're still bad, but Indianapolis is better. The good guys are winning.

Wonder how many of these are sanctuary cities?

I had a difficult time finding a current list of sanctuary cities. I believe the top two on the list are sanctuaries. I was wondering whether refusal to enforce the law sends a message about softness on crime more than I was wondering about ethnicity of perps.

DETROIT PODIUM SWEEP!!! YESSSSS!!! Break out the champagne!

Very surprised that Newark isn’t on the list. Had a cabdriver take me, I am convinced, down the worst street in Newark on purpose to scare the daylights out of me. He succeeded.

Huh. I wonder what all of these geographically diverse areas have in common?

I am surprised there are no areas in New Port News or Hampton on the list.

When I worked in Tidewater, Va., there were neighborhoods you went to only in the early morning.

I lived one block from Mack and Helen and it was tough.

After I got my first degree I moved to Gratiot and Hazelwood a few blocks from Rosemary.

Then I left for Ann Arbor for degree # 2

There’s nothing in Maryland or Virginia that can hold a candle to Indianapolis, Chicago and Detroit!!!

Not ready to admit the good guys are winning. There is peace in a mass grave and an honors camp. Berlin was safer in 1936, by some accounts, that it was in the Penny Opera days a decade before.

All in all, to paraphrase Fields, I'd rather spend a week, one weekend, in Philadelphia.

“Hot Damn! For once California is out of the running.”

Yes, and when you open the file on the “100 Safest Cities” California has 23 (and I live in one of them).
OTOH it would be interesting to know the “ethnic makeup” of the 100 worst. The top of the “hit parade” for California is Oakland. Which hasn’t had a white mayor (that is excluding Jerry Brown who is California’s answer to Bill Clinton) since 1972 if my memory serves me correctly.
