The platoon of Chinese soldiers slipped across the boundary into India in the middle of the night, according to Indian officials. They were ferried across the bitterly cold moonscape in Chinese army vehicles, then got out to traverse a dry creek bed with a helicopter hovering overhead for protection.
They finally reached their destination and pitched a tent in the barren Depsang Valley in the Ladakh region, a symbolic claim of sovereignty deep inside Indian-held territory. So stealthy was the operation that India did not discover the incursion until a day later, Indian officials said.
China denies any incursion, but Indian officials say that for two weeks, the soldiers have refused to move back over the so-called Line of Actual Control that divides Indian-ruled territory from Chinese-run land, leaving the government on the verge of a crisis with its powerful northeastern neighbor.
Indian officials fear that if they react with force, the face-off could escalate into a battle with the powerful Peoples Liberation Army. But doing nothing would leave a Chinese outpost deep in territory India has ruled since independence.

No, China negated the Soviet influence in Southeast Asia once the US left Vietnam.
. . . replacing it with their own. No benefit to the USA there. And what with the modern-day rapprochement between Red China and Putin’s new Russian Empire, it’s like what we thought happened never did happen.
What if they gave an invasion in the forest and nobody saw it. What difference would it make?
(to glue three silly examples into one for fun)
The benefit to the USA was that China forced the Soviet Union to back off its pledge to help Vietnam if it was ever attacked. It weakened the Soviet Union and helped the US defeat her.
“Come on, India! This is why you have nuclear weapons.”
We could only hope; a war between these two would be the only chance we have to regain the standard of living we enjoyed 25 years ago. Sad, but true.
“No, China negated the Soviet influence in Southeast Asia once the US left Vietnam.”
Soviet influence replaced US influence; Red China and communist Vietnam fought one proxy war, and the Soviet’s puppet (Vietnam) beat Red China’s (Kampuchea).
Not only Nixon...but every other Free Trade Communist who continues to support Free Trade with Communist China....is responsible for bankrolling the PLA
Just wonder which side the Free Trade Communists will take: The ChiComs....or the Rape-A-Second Indians?

You're so mean! How about India placing cardboard cutouts of naked women on the surrounding hills overlooking the Chinese camp. Those Chinese guys will go nuts, being a long way from home in a cold place.
America is one of the rape capitals of the planet, with a significantly higher rate of overall and per-capita rape incidents than India.
Rapes per 100,000 population. Grey areas - statistics unavailable.
The recent violent rapes in India generated massive public protests that forced the government there to make rape one of the crimes liable to be punished with the death penalty.
This incident happened in America recently, but you wouldn't know because of the general apathy to rape, and a high tendency to be straddled on high horses here:

The suspects accused of raping and molesting a 13-year-old mentally disabled girl videotaped part of the crime, authorities said.
District Attorney Pat Head would not say what the videotape revealed, but said he did not plan to show it to the grand jury.
Up to 25 males ages 12 to 25 raped and molested the girl for 12 hours after luring her off of a bicycle and into an apartment building, police said Wednesday.
Eight suspects have been arrested and warrants were issued for three others sought in the Oct. 13-14 attack, Cobb County police spokesman Dana Pierce said.
Lured, Then Attacked Repeatedly Police said four men leaving a high school football game met the girl on her bicycle and persuaded her to accompany them to an apartment. They raped the girl and then took her to an abandoned apartment in the same complex, where as many as 20 males attacked her, police said.

What happened with the recent Steubenville rape case? Dead already with nary a public reaction. Pathetic.
Those with knucklehead dreams of a nuclear war in Asia better prepare themselves and their children for a protracted military draft that will be installed to feed the war efforts there, because any war between China and India will suck Australia into it, and along with Japan, too, quickly expanding into a world war and the US getting fully involved to prevent a takeover of Asia by China - because when that happens, Chinese domination will spill over onto America.
“Those with knucklehead dreams of a nuclear war in Asia better prepare themselves and their children for a protracted military draft...”
Those with knucklehead dreams that this country will ever have a draft again are delusional.
“because any war between China and India will suck Australia into it, and along with Japan, too, quickly expanding into a world war and the US getting fully involved to prevent a takeover of Asia by China - because when that happens, Chinese domination will spill over onto America.”
Red China already dominates America. We have no troops to send to a war which happens to involve two factions with over a billion people each. As a defecting Soviet pilot pointed out, if you kill one million Red Chinese per day it would take three years to kill them all.
Duh! What did you think the draft would be for?
There are too many American strategic and economic interests tied into Asia. When war breaks out, Americans will be flown in to the killing fields.
There is no need to kill 1 billion red Chinese. No one takes over a country by killing all its inhabitants. They do it by crippling its military, which is not 1 billion strong.
“There are too many American strategic and economic interests tied into Asia.”
There are business interests, not “American interests”. People will join the Microsoft Division or the Dell Division if they choose to deploy there; they were the ones that built those economies, and they can do with them as they please with mercenary armies.
“No one takes over a country by killing all its inhabitants.”
That’s what Carthage said; run into any Carthagian-Americans lately?
I assure you this country will never again have a draft; they may pay army privates $150K per year (and run the printing presses 24/7 to do it), but there will never again be a draft. This is a consequence of liberalism, but a good one; when the concept of a nation died decades ago, there is no reason to invent “national interests”. If we won’t draft to protect our borders, we won’t do it to defend India’s.
“You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations! There are no peoples! There are no Russians! There are no Arabs! There are no third worlds! There is no West! There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multi-variate, multi-national dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, Reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds, and shekels! You get up on your little twenty-one-inch screen, and howl about America and democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T, and Dupont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.” - Arthur Jensen Network (1976)
“There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T, and Dupont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.
Too true; since then the sense of a national identity has successfully been eroded further.
And to think Chayefsky wrote that screenplay in 1976.
Incredible foresight.
One of the reasons why I believe we will never have a draft is how Vietnam played out. The high command that directed the war admitted a lot of mistakes later, with no consequences. The next president pardoned all who dodged the draft. While most veterans were still alive, our country normalized relations with, and started shipping jobs to, the communist victor.
Who would ever be stupid enough to answer a call to arms to fight halfway around the world? My guess is nobody...
“...Nixon started that ball rolling.”
So by this logic we can blame Admiral Perry for the Pacific War and George Washington for the Civil War because they “started the ball rolling”?
False dilemma. Neither Washington nor Perry started those respective balls rolling in those cases. Nixon actively pursued China in his case, and his own politics are an indicator of what would follow.
