The high-profile American prison camp in Cuba used to house what the U.S. government considers to be some of the world's most dangerous terrorists also happens to be the world's most expensive prison, as Reuters reports:
The Pentagon estimates it spends about $150 million each year to operate the prison and military court system at the U.S. Naval Base in Cuba, which was set up 11 years ago to house foreign terrorism suspects. With 166 inmates currently in custody, that amounts to an annual cost of $903,614 per prisoner.By comparison, super-maximum security prisons in the United States spend about $60,000 to $70,000 at most to house their inmates, analysts say. And the average cost across all federal prisons is about $30,000, they say.
To a certain extent, this makes obvious sense. The U.S. government considers the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay far more dangerous than domestic prisoners at high-security prisons in the United States. But it's still a fairly shockingly large amount of money to spend on imprisoned terrorists.
President Obama also cited the cost of Guantanamo as one reason he wants to shut it down. But remember, when he blames Congress for his own inability to shut down the terrorist prison camp, he's lying:
In fact, Obama’s “close GITMO” plan — if it had been adopted by Congress — would have done something worse than merely continue the camp’s defining injustice of indefinite detention. It would likely have expanded those powers by importing them into the U.S.
I can see the benefit of fining someone.
I can see the benefit of making someone a temporary worker -- like a chain gang for mining, farming, or roadwork.
I can see the benefit of executing people who only hurt society. I'd like to see this increase greatly. Totally serious.

Well you have 3 choices - kill them, imprison them or let them go. Prisons are a cost of doing business in a society. The cost is a drop in the bucket compared to all the other wasteful spending going on in this government.
This really only works when the criminal eventually acknowledges his guilt and feels remorse for his actions - which fewer and fewer crimnals do. He does not have guilt or remorse because he does not share the value system of the larger society, and the larger society increasingly has less and less of a consensus on what its values actually are.
Before the 1700s, the purpose of imprisonment was: a brief period of custody before execution, punishment for failure to pay monetary debts, dereliction of professional duties, monitoring individuals who were considered politically or ideologically dangerous, etc.
Thieves, rapists and smugglers were usually publicly humiliated, whipped and often branded or hobbled or set to hard labor. Murderers,spies, traitors and persistent recidivists of lesser crimes were usually executed.
Typically anyone who remained imprisoned for a long time instead of executed was a member of the highest ranks of the social elite.
And probably cheap at twice the price, so long as they are NOT on US soil, or in the field as enemy combatants. Which is exactly what they would become once again if released back into the wild. There is a very high rate of recidivism among the former inmates of Gitmo.
And NO price is too high to keep these bloodthirsty brigands off US soil. Once transferred to a prison on US soil, there is a whole set of imaginary “rights” conferred upon them that they do not now enjoy. To be sure, the Department of “Just-Us” under Eric Holder would be falling all over themselves in the scramble to endow these criminals with all kinds of legal protections, up to and including Mirandizing them and appointing legal counsel to serve their interests.
Nidal Hasan SHOULD have been transferred to Gitmo the moment they got the bleeding stopped, and placed in the infirmary there. Anybody that operates under “false flag” is not merely an enemy combatant, but an agent provocateur as well.

Yet amazingly we can’t fund our seniors, our veterans and our disabled adequately so that htey can be warm in winter, have enough to eat, and have enough to live on- many seniors get a whopping $12,000 or so a year- and thsoe maggots in guantanamo have nearly 1 million dollars a year spent o ntheir keep? What the hell are they doing? Rpoving baths in champagne or soemthing?
Yup- Social security is ‘running out of money [thanks to our governemnt NOT being fiscally responsible with OUR money) yet we’re soemhow able to provide free school for ILLEGAL aliens, provide frede health care for them, provide all manner of costly projects and services to them- give gunatanamo prsoners of war everythign they could ever want- Send billions of dollars to TERRORIST hostign nations- Spend $1.5 billion dollars on our ‘dear leader’ for his personal pleasures in just 3 years in office- give cognress raises EVERY stinkin year to the tuen of tens of thousands of dolalrs per individual- while denyiong our seniors, veterans and dissabled even a pitiful 30-40 dollart am onth raise to at least help offset the massive rising costs
