Jordan is a real oddball.
Never mind Jordanian doubletalk. It’s the Obama doubletalk that’s got us bumfuzzled.
To the Muslim, there is no concept of “truth”, there is only “what do I need to say to advance my agenda?”
imho there will come a time when the jordanians will be able to grow all their own food.
They grow excellent cucumbers, far bigger and juicier than Israeli cucumbers, though ours are catching up. Their dates are very popular here, too.
I have seen three trends in desert farming in the last year — which in combination I think will change the world in the next decade or two.
The first is brackish water irrigation which the Israelis are doing in the Negev. Also, there are projects using brackish water in Eritrea and Mexico.
The second is using solar power to desalinate sea water for green houses. There’s a project in Australia called Sundrop Farms that’s using this model. One or more of the Persian Gulf emirates are adopting this model. Their ambition is to food independent in 10 years.
The third trend I’ve seen is innovations in RO & FO. The membranes are going to get much better. The most amazing is a new breakthrough in RO membranes by Lockheed Martin. If Lockheed Martin is to be believed, they’ll have a membrane available in two years that 100 times more efficient than current generation membranes. (They don’t say anything about fouling or durability. So we’ll see.) But there are other membranes by other companies that also look impressive.
When desalination becomes cheap enough its applications will jump from municipal to agricultural purposes. Then the world changes.

Then environ-mental-ists will find a pretext to predict global catastrophe caused by massive desalination waste, or discarded membranes, or something. The sea is getting too salty. Herrings are already pickled when they get netted. I can see (haha) it now.
They have been doing this in Saudi Arabia for decades. The desalinized water is piped in very large diameter pipes from the Gulf to Riyadh. There it is run throuh people and their houses and as sewage is used to irrigate.
They also use it in covered structures, greenhouses if you will, to grow vegetables. The covered hemicylindrical structures are for growing not just for starting plants.
I am now periphally involved in a massive addition to such facilities in Qatar. Gas makes it possible.in 2012, fracking produces unimaginable quantities of gas.
What we have learned in 2012 is that Were California to frack gas, they could produce massive quantities of water. It’s just a matter of time till the rationalization begins there

Yeah, there’s that. But Na & Cl can be converted into some very useful chemical stock—especially if combined with CO2 or H2 or O. Somewhere along the line people are going to figure this out. I’ve already seen nascent efforts along these lines.
