Then environ-mental-ists will find a pretext to predict global catastrophe caused by massive desalination waste, or discarded membranes, or something. The sea is getting too salty. Herrings are already pickled when they get netted. I can see (haha) it now.

Yeah, there’s that. But Na & Cl can be converted into some very useful chemical stock—especially if combined with CO2 or H2 or O. Somewhere along the line people are going to figure this out. I’ve already seen nascent efforts along these lines.
