Syria crisis: UN's del Ponte says evidence rebels 'used sarin'

Testimony from victims of the Syrian conflict suggests rebels have used the nerve agent sarin, according to a leading United Nations investigator.

Carla del Ponte told Swiss TV there were "strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof".

However, she said her panel had not yet seen evidence of government forces using chemical weapons.

Syria has recently come under growing Western pressure over the alleged use of such weapons.

Ms del Ponte, who serves on the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, said in an interview with Swiss-Italian TV: "Our investigators have been in neighbouring countries interviewing victims, doctors and field hospitals.

Yet John McCain is in a desperate rush to arm “The right people” but hasn’t gotten around to telling us who they are.

Interesting, in light of the Obama regime person who said it’s none of our business if the Syrian regime uses sarin on its own people.

But what if it is the terrorists that the Obama regime is arming? As appears to be what the UN is saying. How did the thugs get access to sarin?

This story makes me wonder if Israel suspected that Iranian missiles are equipped to deliver WMD’s such as sarin, and are being transferred to Hezbollah so they can be used against Israel.

This article says that the UN spoke to people in neighboring countries, which is how they have the evidence of sarin being used. How would the rebels distribute sarin so that it ended up in neighboring countries? Do the rebels have planes? Can something like that be disbursed through shoulder-fired rockets or something like that?

There exist an interesting series of pictures of technicals evidently used for laying down gas. A howitzer equipped with something like a gas-protected sort of tent.

Used by Iran against the North. We have the shots, but they’re virtually unknown.

How fast does sarin act? Is it a thing where the person who disperses it would have to be protected or else they would die before they could finish the job - like if they were in a crop-duster? How likely is it that if the rebels used sarin they had delivery systems from somebody higher, like Iran or (gag) Obama?

For Sarin they’d have to be protected and also carry antidote for emergencies. The antidote is jumbo shots of atropin and doesn’t work all that well.

Often Sarin is laid down in binary form, that is, the load is harmless until it hits the target. But even then, the wind can turn on you.

Would sarin use usually be detectable in neighboring countries because of the wind?

If so it’s doubly stupid that the Obama regime guy said it’s none of our business if sarin is used on Syrians - unless we’re throwing any of our allies in the area under the bus.

And if Obama is providing the means for the rebels to use sarin, everybody in the area would see it as a steaming pile of poop from Obama, wouldn’t they?

Just out of curiosity - is sarin something that could have been brought into Venezuela by Hamas and Hezbollah agents flown on direct flights from Iran? Is it bulky and dangerous even in binary form?

Part of the reason I ask about that is because the sudden anti-Obama language of Venezuela’s new communist leader reminds me of the same kind of build-up with Kim Jong Un. Very strange, and it feels staged to me. Chavez was allies with Ahmadinejad, and if trouble is staged with VEnezuela it could provide another potential avenue for Iran to deliver its WMD’s (including anything Syria shipped to Iran) to the US in an attack. Of course appearing to be Venezuela instead of Iran.

It’s cheap and even easy to make.

This is an old Army sarin test:

Personally I think this article rates a little higher than just 'News/Activism' and 'Current Events', and I'm the guy around FR usually petitioning for articles to be *removed* from 'Breaking News'.

I'd judge this one to be 'Front Page News' at least.

This is from May. But, the same idea remains.

Also, according to the UN website. The UN has the ability to see which wmd’s were used. But, cannot say who used them. They are not set up for that. Other organizations can do that. That is why she said ‘strong suspicions’ and did not give an absolute.
