The US Senate on Monday passed a bill aimed at ending tax-free shopping on the internet but the move looks set to face fierce opposition before it becomes law.

The Marketplace Fairness Act, which has cross-party supporter and the backing of powerful retailers, would give states the power to require retailers with sales over $1m to collect state and local sales taxes for online purchases.

Very transparent.

There are also lots of opportunities for political harassment -- e.g. the tax authorities of blue states can harass the NRA's online shop.

Very good point. That will indeed happen. The evil leftists in Blue states will have a field day harassing Conservative businesses.

Rush still talks about the State of New York requiring him to provide data supporting where he works throughout the year. He still is harassed some 14 years or so since he left New York.

They are many sadistic leftists in State bureaucracies that thoroughly enjoy trying to destroy other humans. They probably fantasize about being back in WWII as concentration camp guards. I truly believe they are that evil.

Interesting that both Oregon Dem senators voted NO. But that may be because Oregon does not have a sales tax.

You are correct. The current prohibition on out-of-state collection of sales tax on internet sales is a subsidy to online sellers. The current system makes me feel guilty when I buy items online because I know I am making a personal economic decision to save money (free 2-day shipping and no sales tax - Amazon Prime) at the expense of my neighbors. I also feel guilty annually when I don't remit the sales because I know nobody else is doing it. Unfortunately, when I drive through my NC hometown, I see way too many closed-up store fronts of retailers that had been fixtures for decades. I know there are more reasons than tax-free internet purchases causing so many business closures, but if the choice were price neutral, I know many would rather shop AND BUY at their local business. Now, because Amazon and others have a 6.75% head start, too many shop local and go home to complete their purchase on the internet.

This bill will result in me PAYING more sales tax, but I won't OWE more sales tax as a result. If NC can maintain its current conservative majority, I can hope they will reduce rates (income tax and sales tax) for the new revenue they receive if this bill becomes the law of the land.

All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.

This is not a bill to raise federal revenue. It is to permit states to collect taxes from on-line retailers.

McTraitor and of course his butt-buddy Ms. Lindsey voted for the tax increase (internet tax is a tax increase anyway you cut it). Vote these two RINOs, and the rest of the usual suspect RINOs out of office. They are nothing in the world but democrats that call themselves republicans.

Assume what you are being told about any political issue is a lie or at least a half-lie and you will generally be with the smart money.

The internet sales tax proposal is (a) a Dem/Rino idea to suck more money from the peoples’ pockets into the Govt bucket; and (b) backed by large retailers as a way to damage if not destroy smaller businesses? How you say? Simple. The myth is that only big businesses sell by internet. The truth is that smaller businesses aka “brick and mortar” businesses also sell via internet, as well as over the counter. And many smaller businesses have only an internet sales outlet, particularly tiny businesses that can’t really afford the high cost of commercial real estate purchase/rental/leasing.

Forcing significant and complex taxing mandates on smaller businesses will hurt them FAR more than big businesses, with who the small fry are trying to compete.

The whole affair is just another screw job done to the American people. As is Obama’s Cr*pcare. As will be the Gang of 8’s Amnesty for the est. 11 to 30 million undocumented Democrats and the tens of millions more of their extended families.

BTW, the idiot Republicans who think amnesty will get them the Mexican vote should realize it will not. They were become Dem Party takers. And swell the ranks of the gimmie whites, blacks, hispanics, orientals, etc who vote for handouts.

Do you think the idiot Republicans care? Isn’t it likely that once amnesty is in place, they’ll just change parties and help the Dems pass more entitlements for the newest citizens?
