The US Senate on Monday passed a bill aimed at ending tax-free shopping on the internet but the move looks set to face fierce opposition before it becomes law.

The Marketplace Fairness Act, which has cross-party supporter and the backing of powerful retailers, would give states the power to require retailers with sales over $1m to collect state and local sales taxes for online purchases.

To: plain talk

Just gives government more power as most laws do.And that’s not good because we have too many laws and too much government that these laws mandate

If passed this bill would require sellers to be aware of the separate taxing rates in more than 8000 locations around the country.

Can you say STOOPID LAW?

Yes, I can!

I wonder if this would apply to third party sellers on the big online shopping sites.

Article 1 Section 7

"All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives;"

Has this already passed the House, or are we just disregarding The Constitution when it is convenient?

There is a lot of pressure on both Dems and Republicans from brick and mortar stores to force online outfits to charge sales tax.

But the online outfits in their states already do. Do the brick and mortar stores charge the sales taxes of the jurisdiction where all of their customers shop?

And of course local and state governments are greedy for the money.

Nearly every state with a sales tax has a mechanism by which they can collect sales tax on out of state purchases made by their residents.

Hoping it goes nowhere in the house, but it makes one wonder, if its going nowhere in the house, why would a single senate R vote for it? Fix in?

I’m against this internet sales tax crap, I’m just saying there are a lot of supposed conservatives that are for it.

McCain voted for it, Flake voted "present." Those MFCS's. My Senators F***ed me again. The first National Sales Tax and the camel's nose is well inside the tent. And the two Republicans from Arizona voted for it. It ain't Barry Goldwater's state anymore.

Link.

How can this be constitutional when long ago mail order sales across state lines were ruled exempt under the Commerce Clause?

The only difference between mail order sales and internet sales is the method of merchant contact by the buyer, mail order is by mail or phone and internet is by internet or phone.

The delivery method is the same.

“If passed this bill would require sellers to be aware of the separate taxing rates in more than 8000 locations around the country. Can you say STOOPID LAW?”

that adds more regulatory burden on businesses and creates more government departments to oversee all that . Almost all laws/bills do this. government is the problem. democrats : their main goal is to increase government power which leads to a decrease in individual rights and freedom and a less efficient economy.

The youngsters in Ohio whom Obama told to “reject voices warning of government tyranny” should just LOVE this.

That count is incorrect. Flake (AZ) did not vote. “Present,” just like Obastard would have.

what law is a good law. we had enough government in the 1800’s and didn’t need to add the thousands of laws in the 1900’s
we need to go back to 1900

Too many laws, most not needed. If we had a law against stupid people, or naive people, we could do away with most laws. Instead, we have stupid naive people creating more laws. And we have stupid naive people voting in stupid naive legislators who make more stupid laws.

I think it’s because the USPS doesn’t get their piece of the action on the internet. Someone might ship by UPS or FedEx rather than the post office, and we can’t have that.

Eliminate the USPS and problem solved!

At least cut them to one delivery a week.
