Conservatives may be less likely to buy energy efficient light bulbs if they're packaged as environmentally friendly, new research suggests.
In one study, participants were given $2 to spend on a light bulb with a choice between a 50-cent incandescent bulb and a $1.50 compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb. They were told the CFL bulb would last 9,000 more hours and reduce energy costs by 75 percent compared with the old-fashioned bulb.
Both liberal and conservative participants were more likely to choose the CFL bulb, the researchers found. But if the CFL bulb was marked with a sticker that said "Protect The Environment," those who identified as politically moderate or conservative shied away.

I shy away from them because they’re crap. They don’t last long at all. I have good old fashion bulbs that have been burning since I bought my house 7 years ago. Those silly CFLs that I bought have since burned out and I’ve been replacing them with the old fashion kind.
My first grade class passed around a puddle of it, much to our amusement. I think the teacher helped. :-)
you 2 are so right
they work like crap with motion sensors
Another one of these “studies.” A social psychologist thinks he can explain human behavior by going out to the mall and asking a few people to participate in a test. They add up the numbers and publish the percentages, and proclaim to the whole world that they now have a deep insight into human behavior.
BTW, CFL’s are stupid. LED’s are energy efficient and last long, but are expensive and give ghostly blue light.
Same here. When someone tries to sell me a "green" product, I ask them why I would want to spend money on a substandard item to perpetuate a hoax.
I’m forced to buy these pieces of crap that, in my experience, last nomlonger than the good old incandescent bulbs. When they fail, I through them in the recycling and the the green wienies work it out. I’ll be damned if I’ll go out of my way to support this madness.
I would choose an LED cluster (bulb, whatever) instead of either of those, even at the much higher price of LEDs. Extreme cold climate here. Lowest low of the winter here (ongoing) was -39, F. CFLs don’t work outdoors at all in extreme cold and don’t work very well or for long indoors. Cold is also hard on filaments of incandescents (don’t last long). LEDs last far longer than either of the others and don’t use much battery at all (no rural electric lines within miles and miles and wouldn’t be low cost, if there were).
I like LEDs for outdoor lights. I replaced the malibu type with them ($6 each) and even though they’re not as bright, they never burn out. The Malibus would burn out, or wiggle loose from thermal cycles.
The MR16 options are good, too, but beware of the package size being larger than a real MR-16.
We shy away from dimbulbs too...
In my experience, the CFL’s do not live up to their longevity claims. The bulbs actually burn dimmer over time...sure, they still technically work, but they don’t work well.
And, if you use one outdoors in the cold, it takes a while to get to full brightness.
We have one in the bathroom at work...first thing in the morning, you sit in the dark for the first 15 seconds of your session.
The CFL’s also strobe 60 times a second, which actually bothers some people (including me). And one thing I remember from the military - if you had aspirations to be a pilot, you were told to throw out your flourescent desk lamp and get an incandescent...because the strobing causes eye fatigue.
I’ve also got some LED flashlights...very impressive. And, an electrial engineer in my department installed some LED fixtures in his office, which replace the flourescent fixtures and bulbs. Again, very impressive.
I think LED is the future..flourescent has never really been any good.
Maybe we don’t want our purchased items preaching at us? And it is a real stretch to say that CFC bulbs protect the environment. I have seen one explode.
Yes, isn't that nice? I have a huge supply of 100-watt bulbs and 100/150/200-watt bulbs and am now buying 75-watt and 60-watt bulbs. Enough for a lifetime, I estimate.
Would that be Fred “please let me have my committee back” Upton?
Nice Graybeard,
Most of us don’t have a choice on who takes our garbage. Glad that you are getting a good deal AND sticking it to the Environmental creeps.
>> They were told the CFL bulb would ...
Mercury, circuit failure, structural weakness, cost, and no heat value on those very cold days...
And what about the unreported industrial cost, waste, and increased occupational hazards of CFLs? And the marketing, regulations, and retooling costs...
The Left is just too damn smart.
Glenn Beck called Rep. Fred Upton (R.) Michigan) "all socialist" for co-sponsoring legislation phasing out incandescent light bulbs when the bright idea first came up during the Bush administration.
The beleaguered American people looked to Upton to sponsor legislation when he appeared to have a change of heart a couple years later. He stated he'd "take another look at the light bulb issue" if he were re-elected and became chair of the energy committee.
However, we're still waiting for his other shoe to drop.....but up to the current time, he's apparently no longer a live wire in DC....and it's actually a matter of conjecture if he's even alive and breathing among the other dim bulbs in Congress.

Well, possibly, but I heard that LED bulbs become dim over time. They also produce an odd, displeasing kind of light. Maybe they can be improved over time. *sigh*
