Feds Pull 3D-Printed Gun Design from Web
Breitbart's Big Government ^ | May 9, 2013 | Mary Chastain

Posted on 05/09/2013 4:59:05 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The federal government has sent a letter to a personal defense advocate demanding he remove the 3D blueprints for a functional homemade gun from his website.

Cody Wilson of Defense Distributed, which hosts designs for 3D-printable firearms and firearm components, has complied with the government order to remove the files.

“DEFCAD files are being removed from public access at the request of the US Department of Defense Trade Controls,” reads the banner at the top of his website defcad.org. “Until further notice, the United States government claims control of the information.”

Defense Distributed's Twitter account lays blame on Secretary of State John Kerry:

Defense Distributed @DefDist

#DEFCAD has gone dark at the request of the Department of Defense Trade Controls. Take it up with the Secretary of State.

I agree but they haven’t directly targeted 3D printing...yet.
***Well, they sure as hell seem to be in process on that target. Did you read the article?

Utterly predictable contravention of The Constitution.

I did. So far no calls for regulating 3D printing itself. Only calls for outlawing printed guns.

Once they outlaw the guns I think they will follow the music/movie piracy scheme: Pick people at random who download the files and have records of actually owning 3D printers. Then raid them to make a very public example

I've still got a t-shirt. I wear it to get my DL pic taken.

I think the best one was the fellow who had RSA in 3 lines of Perl tattooed on his arm.

Yeah, this will work. There are 90 million gun owners in this country. How many computer owners are there? You think maybe 10% might look askance at Big Sister throwing her weight around like this? 25%? 50%? More?

I've said a number of times that before all this is over we're going to be sharing fighting holes with some rather odd allies. Freedom is like that.

I hope what you say is true. I hope their resources are limited.

But the obvious constitutional affront goes unaddressed. This is a combination of 1st amendment and 2nd amendment rights.

So maybe Congress will soon see a bill for requiring permits for prospective 3D printer buyers.

***Calling for the outlawing of the OUTPUT of a 3D printer is the same as calling for the outlawing of the device itself.

Authority?

A great Communist said “power flows from the barrel of a gun.”
So they use theirs to take his.

When it was fired for the first (and only?) time, it was fired from a distance by way of a string tied to the trigger. The young man pulling the trigger with the string said that he was an engineer.

It was also fired hand held as seen in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=drPz6n6UXQY

Well, homemade machine guns were outlawed but there are no regulations on mills and lathes.

You can put together a decent shop for about the same cost as this guy's fancy printer and make practically any gun you want. The only reason few people do is because factory guns are still relatively easy to get. Even with no shop experience, you can learn enough in about a month.

More than anything, I suspect this little plastic gun caused a stir because of dictators and slave owners around the world worried about their subjects getting one. Just like the original "liberator" it is only good for assassinations and sneak attacks. They probably frantically called Obama to “fix it”. This is why it cites “defense trade controls”.
