(CNN) -- Detectives on Saturday arrested the 12-year-old brother of Leila Fowler on a homicide charge in connection with his 8-year-old sister's death, Calaveras County, California, Sheriff Gary Kuntz said.

The brother -- who Kuntz did not name, but did speak publicly after his sister's death -- was arrested at 5:10 p.m. (8:10 p.m. ET) at a county sheriff's office substation in his hometown of Valley Springs, according to the sheriff.

"Citizens of Calaveras County can sleep a little better tonight," Kuntz said.

Leila Fowler and her brother were said to be alone on Saturday, April 27, in their family's northern California home when she was found dead. The 12-year-old told police that he'd seen an intruder leaving the home, then found his sister suffering from stab wounds.

I don’t find it hard to believe that a 12 year old boy could physical overpower an 8 year old girl in a house where no adult was present.

Jon Benet Ramsey was killed with both parents in the house. I find it hard to believe that a 9 year old could overpower. fracture the skull and strangle a 6 year old without disturbing the parents.

Ch 40 briefly showed a picture of him from the vigil. He is a big (tall) boy for a 12 year old, almost as tall as the father.

Chilling thought, but it has crossed my mind that some people don’t seem to have a soul. I don’t remember thinking that years ago- though bad stuff, crazy stuff happened then too. It just seems different now in some way, maybe we just hear more about it.

I remember when the Manson family murders happened my dad heard it on the radio and woke us all up to tell us about it. Now no one would think it was unusual enough to wake people to tell them.

“And on the Tuesday night after the stabbing, the 12-year-old brother said, “I’m not saying goodbye to Leila. I’m saying ‘See you later.’ There are no goodbyes.”

See ‘The Bad Seed’, a film and a novel from 1956.

Those poor parents. I think *this* is a parent’s worst nightmare ... that one child does something awful to the other.

I also wondered the first time I heard this story if the brother actually did it. I hate being proved right.

I wonder if she threatened to tell on him for something he did ... possibly to her. If he was cold-blooded enough to kill her, have an alibi thought out, and also utter those smarmy things about “not saying goodbye,” he may have been doing horrible things for a long, long time.

When you lose someone you love, it hurts. No matter how rotten that person turns out to be, it still hurts.

Film *The Seventh Sign*,

The Guf was not made up for this movie. In Jewish mysticism, the Guf is the Hall of Souls, located in the Seventh Heaven. Every human soul is said to emanate from the Guf. The Talmud teaches that the Messiah will not come until the Guf is emptied of all its souls, which is the basic premise for The Seventh Sign.

I find that most of the time the press doesn’t know the difference between a half sibling and a step sibling.

there have always been people who learn to disable their conscience. they are either tortured by others and just turn off, or enjoy hurting others and eventually their conscience stops working.

the weapon isn’t personal. it’s where it’s used and how many injuries.

when the victim is attacked on the face, it’s personal.

when it’s a gross number of wounds, it’s personal.

If you have a strong enough stomach, you can watch a video clip here of her “alleged” killer — brother Justin Fowler — sniffing and acting heartbroken.

Saw video clip with the brother. Looks big and older than 12. Think you’re seriously on to something here.

I’ve had my doubt’s about the kid’s story from the beginning.

So did I. Why would an "intruder" who was heartless enough to kill an 8 year old girl leave a witness behind?

I see nothing in my Bible about people ever being born without souls, but perhaps the parable of the sewer of the seed explains the situation better as well as the prophecies of the Great Apostacy that would fall upon the churches. Every one alive is a soul(though “dead in trespasses and sin”), but not every soul has been regenerated by the Holy Spirit. CS Lewis makes the statement, “ the world is a sculptor’s shop and all the people in it are statues, but there’s a rumor going around that some of the statues are going to come to life one day”

Many churches have stopped “spreading good seed” so that folks can’t hear the truth(since faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God). Secondly activity by Satan has increased so that there is an increased “snatching away of the seed” so that consciences never get the chance to develop into having a knowledge of what sin is and God’s disapproval of it (which would lead to a knowledge of guilt and culpability as Paul described what the law does, then leading to a desire for God and forgiveness.)

With weak and lukewarm church teaching, people with rocky soil seed, lose their initial faith much more rapidly as what little chance they had to develop a deeper rootednees has vanished. Materialism and the cares “of this world”like weeds have choaked the faith of many and those whose seed was rooted deeply often despair because the shallow teaching of the church at large have left many to feel that they are “going it alone”.

My first thought, upon hearing about this horrible murder was: the brother did it. But I figured that everyone would attack me for saying that so I kept quiet. But I was always quietly sure...

I said this when it first hit the news. I just couldn’t understand why some stranger would go in the house, stab the little girl, and not be seen again. For apparently no reason. I said someone in the family or close to it did it. The simplest answer is usually the correct one. So sad.
