BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Buena Vista Township Police said a 48-year-old Saginaw man is being treated for gunshot wounds sustained in an early Sunday morning confrontation during a robbery attempt.

Officers were dispatched to 2600 N. Outer just after 4 a.m. for a report of a burglary attempt in-progress.

The caller identified himself as the 49-year-old grandson and caregiver of the 98-year-old homeowner and told authorities he had an armed confrontation with the man who he believed had returned for a second time after burglarizing the residence a few hours prior.

Buena Vista Police said they had taken a burglary complaint earlier that night when the elderly woman was home alone. Police said thieves forced the back door of the home and stole a laptop computer and an ATV from the garage. The computer was equipped with an active real-time software application that was being used by the grandson to monitor the woman's well being in his absence.

After seeing online that the monitor had been disconnected, the caregiver went to check on his grandmother and discovered the burglary. Authorities said the woman, who cannot hear or see very well, was most likely unaware of the break in.

Police said the grandson chose to stay with her that night and told police he retrieved a rifle for security. At 4 a.m. he stated had a loud knock at the back door, a brief pause, followed by a dramatic forced entry from an intruder though the side door of the home.

Perhaps it was a .22 rifle.

Too bad it wasn’t an 30.06.

We need cheap suppressors.

Muzzle blast from a 30-06 inside a house is horrendous.

I like these stories better when they end with "the coroner was called for the assailant".

Muzzle blast in a closed room from a 1911 style .45 is like having your sinuses smacked with a baseball bat. WHAT?

Poor gun control, otherwise the intruder would be dead.

Occasionally you just want to wound one and send it back to the hood as a warning.

If you send them back they should be crawling or rolling.

Unfortunately most of these thugs don’t own horses so you can’t toss the body over the saddle and smack the horse on its ass to send it back home.

Investigators tell WNEM.com that the suspect is a fugitive parole absconder.

Figures this is the only identifying information from the cops on the bad guy. So when they let him out next week to wait for yet another hearing, he can go break into a few more occupied dwellings.

It’s a shame the paramedics were too quick.
