After a tumultuous four years overseeing a city long riddled with blight, corruption, crime, and historic financial issues, mayor David Bing has had enough, telling a stunned audience at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History Tuesday that he’d leave when his term ends in December. The 69-year-old Bing, a hall-of-fame NBA player who spent most of his career with the Pistons and then was a successful businessman in Detroit had never ran for office before narrowly winning the 2009 race to replace Kwame Kilpatrick, who in less than a term in office had gone from rising Democratic star to scandal-embroiled mayor to convicted felon. After winning a full term the same year, Bing tried to turn around a city that has been losing population and sinking into an ever-deeper economic hole for decades, with a City Council resistant to his plans for radical changes to save Detroit and the looming prospect of the Republican governor appointing an emergency economic manager who would effectively take control of the city’s finances from its elected officials. When Governor Rick Snyder in March ended months of deliberation by appointing Kevyn Orr emergency manager, with sweeping powers to modify contracts and sell city assets, Bing, whose frustrations had been mounting, had enough.

Its really too bad because Bing was probably the best mayor there since republicans ran the place. More ineffective than anything.
At least he isn’t ending his career in prison.
He’s just getting out of Dodge before the US Marshals get there. Taking all he stole, all he can steal stealthily while trying to insure himself from prosecution before the SHTF. Who knows? Maybe by the time he’s gone a while and when somebody with any sense actually tries to fix what’s wrong and looks into past dereliction, he’ll be lying on a chaise lounge in the Bahamas sleeping with his fat gut out there for all to see, his stolen booty now protected in the Caymans or wherever.
Seems like he means the opposite. If the City Council was his stopping block, you would think Bing would embrace Orr as an ally. Their team of 2 could work wonders. Instead, he quits.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.
That’s what you get when you use a liberal mindset and expect sucess. Putting blacks in prominent positions because they are black is truely the definition of insanity....................see our current POTUS
Too much animosity between Bing, the unions and city council for him to win again. Plus he’s in very poor health.
Anybody know anything about Cincinnati Police Chief James Craig? He’ll be taking over the Detroit police department.
Also, Bing is thinking about running for Wayne County Executive (another nest of corruption).
I don’t know why he would want to hang around for the rest of the year. He will be presiding over a “firing squad”.
I agree. If Bing had been in there for 20 years things might not have gotten so bad in the first place, but by the time he took office it was too late to save it.
His first address to the city council was reprimanding them for managing to get rich off the bones of a collapsing city.
I see a pattern here... He is the "scout" that goes out and see's the corruption, dysfunction etc, and becomes the setup man for bigger things...
A cleaning house of Ficano and that Fackata Carnival that is Wayne County would be grand, especially after the airport fiasco...
When you're pissing into the wind, eventually you get tired of the constantly returning spray. I think Mr. Bing was an idealist, thinking that principles, logic and a good example could win the day. But he threatened the corrupt Detroit power structure that had ruined the city - so they frustrated him everywhere they possibly could.

I confess. Not really. A Democrat City like Detroit with its joblessness, squalor, crime and unemployment mentioned in context with a Mayor not running again, naturally leads one to assume the logical.
So if this guy is a conservative, my bad. Faux Pas, sorry.
I only wonder if this is true, how in the hell he got elected anyway.
Only hard choices remain. Employees to be laid-off, pensions to be cut, money shifted out of services into debt reduction. Not gonna win any friends with that, and why put yourself thru it if you’re pushing 70?
