Acting IRS commissioner resigns in wake of agency scandal

President Obama announced Wednesday that acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller has resigned in the wake of the agency scandal in which conservative groups were targeted.

The president made the announcement in a brief statement at the White House, following a meeting with Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew  and other top department officials in which they reviewed a highly critical inspector general’s report on the practice. The report concluded poor management allowed agents to improperly target Tea Party and other groups for more than 18 months, starting in 2010.

Obama said Lew asked for the resignation and Miller agreed, after being on the job since November 2012.

“Americans have a right to be angry about it, and I’m angry about it,” Obama said from the White House.

Republicans, who along with Democrats have slammed the IRS for the practice, welcomed the resignation Wednesday but made clear they would continue to investigate and press for accountability.

Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., said the resignation "is a necessary first step but more heads need to roll."

Miller’s resignation was part of three-step plan Obama outlined to fix the problem.

The other steps are to put in place the safeguards recommended in the IG report and to work with Congress as it investigates.

“The good news is we can fix this,” Obama said.

Miller became acting commissioner after Commissioner Douglas Shulman completed his five-year term. Shulman had been appointed by President George W. Bush.

The president has proceeded cautiously since the IRS controversy was made public Friday. While he initially said the accusations were "outrageous," he also said he wanted to wait until the report was released before addressing what should be done to hold accountable those responsible.

They weren’t doing anything at the IRS that they didn’t think was okay with the higher-ups. They knew the Boss would approve.

The culture of threats and intimidation starts at the top.
HE needs to go.

Coming from an administration where Biden himself compared Tea Party members to “terrorists” and referred to them as “the enemy.”

Sacrificing a couple of low level apparatchiks and having an agency head resign, is predictable stagecraft for any regime facing a scandal of this magnitude. They’re merely doing the panic dance at the moment, as they round up all the lawyers and lock all the doors.

The White House staff will soon be boarding up the windows, as the enormity of this thing comes more and more into view. Obama’s tone will lose the underlying arrogance and over-confidence he usually displays, as it becomes clear that he’s surrounded by these emerging scandals, and that they’re quickly closing in.

I very much look forward to watching his minions jump ship to save their own skins, while others rush to spill their guts to avoid long prison sentences.

But in an email to IRS employees, Miller claimed he would only be leaving next month because his assignment would be over.

He can still be subpoena.

And without his job to worry about, he might be a bit more loquacious than otherwise.

Breaking the law on this should mean going to prison. In addition there should be no ifs, ands, or butts or politics.

Crooked politicians backstabbing the American people while taking care of their bribing cronies are a real threat to we the people.

No organization that collects money to change our politics and laws should be classified as a non-profit. End non-profit status.

Absolutely. Americans civil rights were violated.

If the government can spend millions of tax dollars to cover for Valerie Plane, a pencil pusher at the CIA, they can certainly use the American citizens money to protect the American citizens...... for a change.

What Republicans need to do is check whether with Miller or his predecessor received a retirement package.

" I would suggest it went down something like this...”Resign or be fired, take you choice. Either way, (with the extra bonus in this brown envelope), we need a scapegoat and you have been selected”.

.... Steven Miller is now claiming that he's leaving because his assignment ends in early June not because he was asked to resign by Obama!

This administration is an absolute Joke. And Drudge is now reporting that despite her Benghazi mistakes, Susan Rice is in line to become the new National Security Advisor.

And this same organization will be in charge of collecting the funding for obomacare. I see a lot of robbing happening in the future, because they're going to need ten times the funds they're claiming they need now. That funding will have to come from someone, somewhere, and the corrupt IRS will be in charge of getting it!

I'm pretty sure he will get a nice package since he is now saying that he is leaving because his term is up in June .... not because Obama asked him to resign. So it doesn't sound like he is resigning at all .... He just won't be seeking another term with the IRS. I'm sure the Prez with a fez knew this all along and just staged today's event for public and media consumption.
