Bacon Restaurant Forced to Close after San Francisco Residents Complain of Aroma of Bacon

A popular San Francisco restaurant called Bacon Bacon must shut its doors Friday after failed negotiations with neighbors who complained about the smell of bacon.

The restaurant serves burgers, grilled cheeses, breakfast sandwiches, and more, all served with bacon. It also runs a food truck, which roams the city providing San Franciscans with bacon.

But now that’s over, the San Francisco Examiner reports:

But now a popular pork-focused restaurant in the Upper Haight must close its doors Friday following months of failed negotiations with neighbors over neighborhood concerns about porcine aroma and grease disposal.

Department of Public Health officials say the owners of Bacon Bacon, located at 205A Frederick Street, have had months since opening the space to address these and other concerns. But following their failure to do so, the restaurant must shut its doors.

The announcement has created a swell of online support for the cafe, including an online petition on the Bacon Bacon website with more than 1,600 signatures from Bay Area residents who support the operation. Owner Jim Angelus said he’s overwhelmed by the support.

“It’s frustrating,” Angelus told the Examiner. “Two weeks ago, the health department showed up saying we had no permits. So we had a hearing and one person showed up saying they were opposed. They told us we had long enough to resolve these issues — and as a result, we have to cease operations May 17.”

My best friend said the same thing. She does allow some poultry so she splits the difference with Turkey Bacon (which when cooked crispy is actually pretty good). But even she says there is nothing like pork.

The Discovery Channel featured the Bacon Bacon food truck in their series, The United States of Food which was shown last July 8th, 2012. Bacon Bacon was featured because it was the top of the "Bucket List" for the best of the best bacon restaurants. Anyone heard of bacon jam? Onions, garlic, bacon, coffee, maple syrup, honey, cider and vinegar. You put it on a slice of bread, layer it with bacon and put a heaping layer of sharp cheddar cheese. Then you put in on a greased grill, cheese side down. Set a hammer weight on top and wait until it gets nice and toasty. You better see how to do it because you are not getting these anymore because of the zero tolerance mentality. Watch the video:
