Colorado Town Passes Ordinance Mandating Gun Ownership (VIDEO)

Another small town in rural America is putting its foot down and making a statement about the importance of one’s right to keep and bear arms.

Nucla, Colorado, a town located approximately 50 miles south of Grand Junction, is taking a cue from Nelson, Georgia, and mandating that each head of household keep a firearm for self-defense.

Earlier this month, by a vote of 5-1, the Nucla community council passed it’s own version of Nelson’s Family Protection Ordinance,” which reads:

In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.

Town Trustee and pro tem Mayor Richard Craig spoke to local news about the decision to approve the controversial ordinance.

“Every head of the household residing in town limits is required to maintain a firearm together with ammunition thereafter. Criminals are put on notice, period. We are armed,” he said, explaining the message that it sends to would-be robbers, thieves and rapists.

“I think my biggest thing is our Second Amendment, that is our right. I don’t think half the people on front range even know what the constitution is, let alone forget it,” .

Asked about how the rest of the country would view Nucla now that it’s requiring gun ownership, Craig responded humorously saying, “Some will probably say ‘yay’ and some of them would probably think we’re a bunch of banjo-playing, glow-in-the-dark idiots.”

While it appears that the majority of the town’s 750 residents support the ‘Family Protection Ordinance,’ there is at least one man who doesn’t: Nucla Town Trustee Bill Long, who voted against the measure.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Brady’s lawsuit against Nelson will play out. Whatever the courts decide, it will likely have a bearing on Nucla, Kennesaw, and any other town or city that has passed or plans on passing a version of the ‘Family Protection Ordinance.

These “must possess a gun” laws should include a penalty (tax) opt out. Then when they are challenged, they need to be taken all the way to SCOTUS, based on the Obamacare ruling.

Its bad law that the Leftists wanted, so make them eat it.

I’d say that everyone should be forced to purchase an AR-15 (must produce for inspection annually), keep 1000 rds of ammunition, and pay for a minimum of 4 range days annually. The alternative would be to pay $1000 annually to pay for those who can’t afford it.

Then we can listen to the rich Leftists howl.

Honestly, I don’t like this. Mandating gun ownership (or anything else for that matter) is a bad idea. I don’t want a gun ban, either.

It should be up to the individual.

Besides, I don’t want people owning guns who don’t know how to handle them.

I live not far from Nucla. They’re nice sensible folks. Looks like America circa 1950.

Kennesaw's law had exemptions. Doesn't sound like this one does.

You to to keep that talk down lest the Kalifornian lefties (actually the entire West Coast) will want to move in just to ruin it. Might have to make a mental note to visit sometime myself though...

I agree. I think there’s a good middle ground, which is for the government to, in its official capacity, advise that residents strongly consider owning firearms, and obtain training and facility with their use, and also advise as to the extent of lawful use of force. Then they should add a statement to criminals to the effect that, in light of the above, y’all might wish to practice your trade elsewhere, because our residents are likely to be armed, they likely know how to shoot, and they likely know what the laws are pertaining to capping your asses. Oh, and have a nice day.

Damned straight! The USSC said as long as a government body has the right to tax then it has the right to demand anything under penalty of tax. Totally tyrannical but that’s the law as it stands. We should make all liberals have a Bible or else pay a $1,000 tax per year.

I don't think this is off the mark. Half the population on the front range is either from California or Mexico (and points south.)

They should have passed a TAX on all Citizens that Do Not Own a Firearm, failure to purchase a product allows us to TAX YOU, just like Obamacare.
