Right-wing historian shoots himself in Notre Dame cathedral 'in protest at gay marriage'

A right-wing historian shot himself dead in front of hundreds of tourists at the altar of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris today, apparently in protest at France's legalisation of gay marriage. Dominique Venner, who had recently been campaigning against gay marriage in France, is said to have calmly walked past the crowds milling around the 850-year-old Cathedral, one of the most popular tourist sites in the world, before taking out a Herstal automatic pistol. The 78-year-old put the gun in his mouth and fired before collapsing on to the altar, according to French media reports.

The man might have been disturbed but I doubt God will look upon that man’s blood as being as desecrating to the church as he does upon the immorality of the surrounding nations! His own blood will be upon his own head after all, not the church itself; but Christ’s shed blood for our sins has been rejected by modern men and this has become an affront to the CHURCH at large!

Well, if one is determined to make such a statement swallowing a bullet has got to be less painful than this.

Too bad muzzies don’t take that approach. We could have a pig roast.

I thought that suicide was an affront to the church. Since one sin is as great as others he basically died committing a sin.

I wasn’t familiar with the pistol, so I looked and yes it’s an automatic (being auto loading).

I hate how they just automatically label this guy as right wing, yet it won’t matter now if they offer an apology now or not because the damage is done.

He was certainly "rightwing," at least as the term is used in French politics.

"Mr Venner, who was awarded a prestigious prize by l'Académie française for one of his historical works, was a former member of the Secret Army Organisation (OAS), the paramilitary group which fought against France giving up Algeria as a colony.

He was jailed for 18 months in La Santé Prison as a political undesirable for his role in the ultra-national organisation and was freed in 1962.

I disagree. I see it no different as the monks who immolated themselves.

Let us pray for the repose of his soul, may the Lord have mercy on all tempted by despair. And may the Lord heal the frightened hearts of the many who witnessed this ultimate selfish act.
Amen!

It sounds like he was a French nationalist. He was right-wing in the sense of being opposed to the left, but not any sort of libertarian or free marketeer, not a garden variety conservative and not especially religious.

One thing about his sort: they aren't necessarily religious believers. They value the Church as a part of France's Western heritage, but don't necessarily believe in a God or in Jesus Christ.

Another thing: they have trouble coming to terms with the fact that many "right-wing nationalists" supported France's collaborationist Vichy government during the war -- or maybe they don't have trouble with it.

It's hard to tell from Venner's wiki page. He seems to be in a gray area somewhere between enthusiasm and disapproval when it comes to fascism.

So he's not really much like today's American conservatives. He really did like guns, though, judging from all the books he wrote about them.

The Lord who looks upon the hearts of men will ultimately judge. Those who are leaders of the CHURCH at large(catholic and protestant) should concern themselves with those things in our world that are affront to God, not an affront to their various notions of orthodoxy!

The blood of men can be cleansed and wiped away but it is the Blood of Christ that cleanses men from all unrighteousness. If the Church at Large is so concerned with those things that are an affront to it instead of to God, then it has forgotten its message! What God has spiritually consecrated, no actions of men can undo that consecration!

well they call such pistols “semi-automatic” as opposed to “full automatic” or automatic like a machine gun, pull trigger one time and it shoots until the magazine or clip is empty.

It is very sad. But I would not call it selfish.

I have to agree with Dr. Sivana. Suicide is a selfish act. The only person who receives any "benefit" from this act is the person who's life is now over. The people at the Cathedral have been aggrieved. The family of the man who took his own life are aggrieved.

Thanks for that background info - revealing.

This sad and dramatic case reminds me of the murder of the ArchBishop of Paris, in 1857, at a church just near Notre Dame. A deranged priest killed the ArchBishop to protest against the newly proclaimed dogma of the Immaculate Conception.
