So this 1972 photo of her in military-style uniform has left German Chancellor Angela Merkel ‘not amused’.

Then called Angela Kasner and aged 17, she is shown happily involved in a civil defence exercise under the gaze of an East German officer.

It was published as Mrs Merkel, who was the subject of austerity protests in Italy at the weekend, tried to play down allegations in a new book that she was much closer to the Communist rulers of the lost Socialist state than she previously admitted to, including holding a post as a propaganda secretary in the youth movement the FDJ.

So the German press prints a photo of Merkel when she was young and under Stasi rule; meanwhile there is not one book written in German that is critical of OweBowMao.

That was a forbidden song in the German Democratic Republic. The GDR national anthem was “Auferstanden aus Ruinen” (Risen from the Ruins), although in this case The Internationale would probably be more appropriate.

The article was posted because it was in the recent news. And it is quite possible she grew up under the Communists. It is sad that anyone had to grow up in that environment.

My recollection is that it was literally just a few weeks after 9-11 that Bush appeased & pandered to the muzzies by calling them a "religion of peace"! And that just a few "extremists" hijacked this wonderful religion of Islam. .....Barf!

My understanding of East Germany (as incomplete as it may be) suggests that,particularly at 17,*not* going along with everything you saw on TV and in newspapers,heard on radio,and was taught in school could actually have been dangerous.I have a much bigger problem with the guy in charge of the EU...Manuel Barosso.In the 70’s,while in college he was an open and vocal MAOIST and today his actions and attitudes clearly indicate that he's *still* a Maoist.
