There are many scenes from “Gone With the Wind” that have achieved immortality. This one was a brilliant feat of cinematography. The camera pans and then rises higher and higher on its dolly, showing the true size of the disaster at Atlanta, while Max Steiner plays minor key versions of “Dixie” and “Old Folks at Home”, finishing with “Taps” as the Confederate flag flies over the rail yard. The screen always goes blurry at this point when I watch it.
