A California bill that would have required manufacturers to figure out how to keep the most common plastic junk out of state waterways died in the state Assembly without a vote Friday.
Assembly Bill 521 was before the chambers Appropriations Committee, and the panel failed to act on it, effectively killing the legislation for the session. It had previously passed the Assembly Natural Resource Committee.
State Assemblyman Mark Stone, D-Monterey Bay, one of the proposals sponsors, was disappointed by the outcome.
AB521 would have required manufacturers to figure out how to reduce 95 percent of plastic pollution along the states coastline by 2024. It carried financial penalties for companies that did not comply: up to $10,000 per day for the worst violations.

FIGURE OUT? F I G U R E OWWWCH! Can you splain to me why the state of CALIF. can't fund all this FIGURIN OUT......? Seems like they themselves should be payin for the 'FIGURIN' OUT' If they want any figurin' out to be done.
Say it occurs to me that a few more instances like this and i'd be surprised if bidnesses would't just pick up stakes and move. Move to say....a less nuttier more bidness friendly state of the union. Figurin out might just cost honest bidnessmens too much money....so they'll prolly might wave byeeee byeeee instead...
WAIT YOU SAY THEY ALREADY
ARE 'hippity hoppin' away at a
terrible rate , in fack, it's gettin so bad that there ain't a tax base left able to fund other socialist nutty ideas Calif. has come up wif?? Damn im a goldanged seer...on this.

Someone has already invented a storm drain which catches floating plastic trash, does not clog (within reason) and is fairly easy to empty. When I find the link, I will post it, unless someone beats me to it.

This idiot used to be my County Supervisor. This was just a $10,000/day tax masquerading as an environmental initiative. IOW, typical Santa Cruz mentality.

Thanks. That’s how I suspected they’d work. I wonder what the cost effectiveness is? I’m not certain the ‘problem’ justifies the solution.

“Im not certain the problem justifies the solution.”
I’m not a “greenie”, but from what I have read & seen, floating trash is a big problem on rivers & lakes and a huge problem where ocean currents cause it to congregate.
Floating plastic trash can be either recycled or since much of it is petroleum based plastic, makes a high energy fuel.
BTW, the “developing world” is a major contributor also.

I don’t like pollution and I’ve never seen it worse than in the 3rd world, but I still am not convinced it is a ‘big problem’. How do you even define it and why is it a problem?
