(Memphis) An elderly man in South Memphis woke up to a burglar in his home.

Police say he didn’t cower in fear, he shot the man hitting the burglar twice!

The alleged criminal is OK but he might have learned a lesson!

Mr. John Lewis says he was sleeping in his bedroom when he heard a noise out in his living room.

He peaked out his bedroom and found himself face-to-face with a burglar, “He told me about three times ‘close your door or I will shoot you. I got a gun.”

Lewis says he obeyed the burglar and went back in his bedroom, but when straight to where he hides his gun, “I came back out and I shot him.”

The 77-year-old fired three times, hitting Travis Weddle twice.

Police say when bullets grazed his chest and wounded his hand, Weddle ditched the 55-inch TV and got out of there,.

“He came out the door and hollered back ‘I left my keys in there’ His car was parked out here. A white Maxima.”

Grandpa wasn’t giving him the car keys so the injured burglar had to walk.

He got about a mile before calling police on himself saying he’d been shot!

What’s so shocking that someone over 60 can fire a gun? I can’t stand thee headlines that have to put an age to someone just because they have a few gray hairs.

Technical question: Does “elderly” mean that you should no longer fire calibers greater than .38?

Rule of thumb stuff. Same with shotguns. I figure if you’re over 80, you should probably only use 20 gauge, or you might hurt your shoulder.

Evidently grandpa didn't have a twelve-gauge.

Too bad.

“This could could qualify for a scene in some TV comedy.”

Just like an old “Sanford & Son!”

“I think we have moved past “hides his gun””

Hey, cut the guy some slack, he’s 77 years old! I think he was really corrageous for what he did. That said, I used to know Memphis pretty well and this is a “normal” event there.

I am 80 and my gun is not hidden and he should have had it in his hand when he peeped out his bedroom door. Age has nothing to do with where you keep your gun.

“I am 80 and my gun is not hidden”

Well, I’m closing in on 73 and mine isn’t either. I just looked at the guy on the TV clip and he seems to be a very old 77. My wife is 70 and just bought herself a new Sig 239 9mm, so we are “well protected” even though we live in a place that absolutely does not have this kind of crime. I am actually more worried about our cops acting out, than having someone try to break in to our home. Our dog is our burglar alarm. Good for you that at your age you are still concerned about your own personal safety.

The burglar seems to have “peaked” in his carrier as a thief.

Grandpa may have any number of medical conditions preventing a controlled shot . We don’t know.

Weirdly enough, there are several black Travis’s out there, (although the most popular Travis is a white, heavily tattooed punk rocker) along with several close variations:

Travanis
Travaughn
Travon
Trayvon
