Lee Rigby will be handed a posthumous tribute normally reserved only for soldiers killed on active duty, it was reported today.
The 25-year-old British soldier, who was hacked to death on Wednesday afternoon in Woolwich, south-east London, will have his name carved onto the stone walls of the Armed Forces Memorial.
Defence secretary Philip Hammond and military chiefs have decided that Drummer Rigby should be remembered on the roll of honour at the National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield, Staffordshire.
It is only right that Drummer Rigby should be accorded the same recognition as those who have fallen in the line of duty, a senior defence source told The Sunday Times.
The memorial already holds the names of the 11 soldiers killed by the 1982 IRA bombings in Hyde Park and Regents Park in central London.
Also remembered on it are the two off-duty soldiers who were fatally shot four years ago outside Massereene Barracks in Antrim, Northern Ireland.
The decision to commemorate Drummer Rigby on the 140ft-diameter memorial comes because he was killed in a terrorist attack, reported the newspaper.

Ah, the UK still recognizes ‘terrorist attacks’ instead of ‘workplace violence.’ Some hope there.
This is what we should have done for our Ft Hood heroes...
Good move. Too bad our country won’t do this.
Absolutely!!
True. Time to rectify what the President did to the killed and wounded at Ft. Hood!
He did die in action. While I doubt the politicians in the UK will do this, they should state he died in action, that the two Mohammadans who ran him over with a vehicle and then chopped his head off are members of the invading Army of Mohammed, treat those two to a military style tribunal, sentence them to death, rub both of them with bacon fat, lop their heads off at the spot where they murdered the soldier, and then let the dogs consume their bodies.
If the Brits did that, you could expect to see a mass exodus of Mohammadans back to the hell holes from which they came. (Yeah, I know those two thugs were “home grown”, but others of their ilk will get the message that they cannot murder soldiers with impunity and they will know those two will never enter “paradise” because of the contact with bacon fat and with dogs.)
There are some moves afoot to try and have them put on trial for Treason (both are British citizens) rather than just murder. While the sentence is (unfortunately) now the same (the death penalty for treason was finally abolished in 2004, whereas that for murder was abolished in 1969 - use had been suspended in 1965), there would be a clear statement made by such a decision.
He DID die in action. We are in a war, whether the media want to believe it or not.

correction
A travesty the Ft Hood victims and their families do not get the same respect
Rigby did die in action . He was attacked and killed by the nation’s enemy who is at war with the nation and with all infidels. The enemy is the Moslem people.
The correct thing to do. Imo.
Blessings to his family.
Well, the Moose Limb made it plain that his attack was an act of war. So it only makes sense. Now will Britain declare war on them. That would only make sense too.
“This is what we should have done for our Ft Hood heroes...”
Amen.
Absolutely!
