Indeed it is! I try to get there every summer, as that is where my Mom and brothers live, and my Dad is buried. It is a breath of fresh air for me, ie: freedom!!!
Bardstown isn’t near Harlan. So we can eliminate that crowd at least.
UPDATE:
Funeral is being held now. The several main roads that we have are being shut down for the procession. LOTS of people lining the roads. 2,400 US flags were donated and line the route from Bardstown to Chapin.
Local (not official) word is that this was a drug related payback. They are looking at the investigations he participated in. His family is being watched as they consider them potentially at risk, also. Although we figure that the perpetrators would have done one of them first if they had intended to go after the family for revenge or to send a message. One guy in Louisville has donated $50K!!! to the reward fund, which I think is close to $100k now. For that much money someone will sell out.
In a town this size, it is always possible that someone could get to the killer before the police and save the need for a trial. I don’t think it is too likely, but certainly possible.
Shotguns used to be all that was allowed to hunt deer at Fort Knox. Don’t know if they even allow it any more.

Depends on where you’re at. I’m in the Irish Hills so its not flat but go 20 miles south and its flat like north western Ohio.

I have been watching the live stream while at work. Very moving funeral (aren’t they all?) I have heard it was a work (drug) related payback. The city drug culture is starting to move into small towns across the country. Don’t have an answer.
I know when I used to visit Taiwan on business that there was a huge sign when you entered the area after customs...in several languages...that said, "ILLEGAL DRUG TRAFICKING IS PROHIBITED ON PAIN OF DEATH."
...and they meant it.
IMHO, we need to empower our rural county Sheriff's Departments to proscute and go after Drug Traffickers with that same amount of gusto and deadly serious intent. Like they used to do for horse and cattle thiefs.
Back then, it was correctly calculated, in the more austere environement in which people lived, that a person taking your horse or cattle was a deadly threat to you and yours. Drug Trafficking is an equally deadly threat to us today.
I know it is hard for people to comprehend or accept right now...but a general "shoot on site," order for drug trafficking would go a long ways to cleaning it up...and the corruption that goes with it.
When he sees, as we all do, more and more instances of those taking that oath, breaking it and trampling it under their feet, then he loses respect for them and what they represent.
In this case, I have it from someone in Kentucky, who is also a respected Freeper, that this incident stemmed from a work/drug payback issue. We will see if that comes out in the investigation.
But the trampling of the Constitution, and the corruption of power is happening all around us right now. We have an entire administration that encourages it by their own acts in the highest offices of the land.
So before you go off on Lurker, learn a few things about him. That's good advise for all of us...to hold our tongue and emotions a bit before we promounce judgement. I know it is good advise with respect to Lurker because I do know a quitre a few things about him which are wholly outside of your judgement of him on this thread.
Officer Ellis was the department's K-9 handler, so he was involved in a number of drug busts in the last couple of years. Apparently the Bardstown PD and State Police are all but positive that this was a revenge killing stemming from one of his drug busts.

Not certain, but my guess would be profiling and/or informants. Although one would think that informants would also help with shipments on alternate routes.

Apparently Officer Ellis was a straight shooter who'd made a number of enemies in the drug community over the years.

Meth seems to be much different than most other illegal drugs, the users seem to be massively debilitated pretty quickly.
Sam blew him away with a double barrel shotgun in the middle of a trailer park in broad daylight, then drove away in his own pickup with all of the neighbors writing down his tag number. He provided testimony against the black widow and in return the prosecutor took the death penalty off the table.
