Hampton carnival canceled after 5 shot, 1 killed

HAMPTON — The Hampton Coliseum Spring Carnival has been canceled following nearby shootings Saturday night that killed at least one teen and injured four others.

Hampton police officers and members of the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division found 16-year-old Ralphael Davis Jr. lying in the road in the 1900 block of Coliseum Drive shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, according to Hampton police spokeswoman Mary Shackleford. Davis, who suffered a gunshot wound to his upper torso, was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 11:14 p.m., Shackleford said.

Officers located four additional victims in parking lots adjacent to hotels in the 1900 block of Coliseum Drive, who were also transported to a local hospital.

Shackleford said a preliminary investigation indicated a verbal altercation took place between two groups of individuals. The altercation escalated when the suspect or suspects displayed a firearm, discharging multiple rounds, which struck the victims.

This year’s shooting wasn’t the first for the Hampton Coliseum Spring Carnival, Hampton police spokesman Jason Price said. Shots were fired as the carnival was closing for the night one evening last year, but no one was shot, he said. Price said he was unable to verify Sunday if there were any shootings at the carnival before last year or if this is the first year the carnival was canceled due to violence.

The 10-day annual carnival, which has been held for more than 35 years, opened Thursday and was scheduled to run through June 2.

Coliseum Director Joe Tsao said annually the carnival draws from 25,000 to 30,000 visitors, and is a revenue generator for the city both in terms of direct spending at the carnival and indirect spending with the area merchants.

Imagine the damage if the perp(s) had aimed and shot/fired.

You have a point. Probably a "lucky" shot that killed the deceased.

I lived in the area for 8 years. Shootings are a regular thing, I am not sure why they cancelled the carnival over it. I don’t remember anything else ever being cancelled.

The Amish; shutting down Summer wherever they can. The beginning of the end of “Civil” Society.

WOA! IT’S A BLACK YUTE!

I was certain that it would be some Amish kid or certainly some type of Caucasian.

Gee, I was wrong again.

The area around the Hampton Coliseum isn’t bad. If you head down Mercury Blvd. towards Newport News’ “East End”, you’re entering a danger zone.

The Mid South Fair had to be moved from Memphis where it had been held since the 1800’s to DeSoto County, Mississippi, because of the danger from the diverse community that used the fair as a time to rob visitors and create gun play. The Commercial Appeal openly ignored the stories of the gun play and robberies at the fair for fear of hurting the visitation but word of mouth was more informative. Memphis is a hellhole, anyone that stays there had better be really cognizant of their surroundings.

Daytona Beach has their Black College Week....which was pretty much turning the beach into a war zone. Hotels tried to stop renting rooms that week...but the Black Racist groups sued (even put one nice DB hotel out of business).

I went to an awesome gun show at the Hampton Colesium in the late 1990’s. I don’t remember anyone getting shot.

A candlelight vigil is planned for 7 p.m. Monday in the Hampton Coliseum parking lot.

For what?

To place candles, teddy bears and Mylar balloons. The perps peeps might come by and pop a few more caps into the bystanders.
