Ten members of Congress are urging the Washington Redskins to change their name because it is offensive to many Native Americans.
The representatives said Tuesday they've sent letters to Redskins owner Dan Snyder, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins sponsor FedEx and the other 31 NFL franchises.
The letter to Snyder says that "Native Americans throughout the country consider the 'R-word' a racial, derogatory slur akin to the 'N-word' among African Americans or the 'W-word' among Latinos."
Among the group sending the letters are the leaders of the Congressional Native American Caucus: Tom Cole (R-Okla.(, and Betty McCollum (D-Minn.).
The nickname is the subject of a long-running legal challenge from a group seeking to have the team lose its trademark protection.

Now if they were called the “Snaggle Tooth Navajos”, then there might be an issue.

It would be interesting to see a poll of American Indians in general and see how many are offended, or even care.
Considering that the Declaration of Independence speaks of "merciless Indian savages"--at least they aren't called the Washington Savages.
If they are forced to take a new name, it's hard to decide which one would be most appropriate for a team representing Washington, D.C.

Anyone...absolutely anyone born in the United States is a "Native American." They are no more Native Americans than I am. I'm sick of this language abuse.
The only people offended are imperial congress-crooks who are offended because they are not being obeyed.

I find it extremely odd when I hear people offended by words like op/mick/squarehead/frog/ect.
I believe most of the outrage is just a matter of political posturing by the left... it’s stupid and makes them look small and foolish in my eyes.
After all naming your team after Redskins (Indians) is a tribute to them....not a derogatory name calling.
A mascot is something that is supposed to be looked up to and imitated......

Not that I support this, BUT... the team could change its’ name to the Washington Natives and keep their logos, fight songs, etc.
