Posted on 05/30/2013 7:17:14 PM PDT by tobyhill
The head of the Louisiana Democratic Party said on the floor of the state Senate this week that opponents of the federal health care overhaul are motivated by President Obama's race -- a remark that drew the scorn of state Republicans who now want her to apologize.
State Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, who is also chairwoman of the state Democratic Party, repeatedly invoked race as she railed against ObamaCare critics.
"I have talked to so many members both in the House and the Senate, and you know what? You ready? You ready? What it comes down to? It's not about how many federal dollars we can receive, it's not about that. You ready? It's about race," she said. "I know nobody wants to talk about that. It's about the race of this African-American president.
She tried to argue that because former House Speaker Newt Gingrich -- who is white -- offered a "similar" overhaul in the past, the criticism this time "comes down to the race of the president of the United States which causes people to disconnect and step away from the substance of the bill."

That would be the race
to preserve life
and the integrity
of the American people.
Conservatives are racists . . . blah, blah, blah . . .
same old crap from the Dems
I’d be willing to bet I’m less concerned about race than Obama is by far.
..she looks like a black Rosie O’Donut
The black woman who made the statement is a racist.
I guess that means the labor unions must be turning racist
It’s tough to argue with an idiot, they tend to be totally incoherent. I think it’s best to just ignore them and continue talking to rational people while avoiding the moron.
You ready Ms Peterson? If I am opposed to obamacare just because Obama is black - are you for it just because he is black?
Don’t worry the IRS will be handling your healthcare.
” Sir, you have donated money to conservative causes, were very sorry but there are no lungs available for you at this time “ . “ Please resubmit your request when you come to your senses and donate money to progressive causes, thank you” .
This is not sarcasm!
Yea the Race to find enough cash to make this program workable to the average citizen!
Another Obama plot to break the middle class of any economic funds, choke em till they die!
I’m sure she is.
This kind of a statement is so bogus. I supported Herman Cain. Why did I do that if I don’t like Blacks based on skin color?
These people are throw-backs to some of the beliefs of the KKK. I’m sure she can’t comprehend that.
State Sen. Karen Carter Peterson: motivated by idiocy.
Now the desire for effective affordable health insurance and health care is racist. I doth think though protest too much!
That’s so 2008...
Here we go again...sigh
Peterson lives in New Orleans Warehouse District. She is married to Dana Peterson, a political consultant. The couple has no children. She appears in Spike Lee’s documentary about Hurricane Katrina, When the Levees Broke.
On the plus side, I think that card is so worn out that everyone at the table knows when someone is holding it and about to play it. It’s laughable and losing effectiveness.
Most conservatives are no longer afraid of the race card. We’re past that and race no longer trumps all.
Statement from Karen Carter Peterson, Senator District 5:
I think we should judge a policy by its content, not the person proposing it. To be clear, I didnt call any person racist. Rather, I was simply relaying the truth about conversations Ive had with my colleagues and the factors they considered on the expansion of Medicaid. While others are using this as an opportunity to take my comments out of context in order to distract from the true issue, I think its critical that we focus on the substance of the policy because its the right thing to do for Louisiana. Expanding health care access is a vital issue for the people of Louisiana, no matter what its called or who offers it. The Republican Party and even our very own Governor have chosen to twist my words and I would politely suggest that they review the attached transcript that reveal what I actually said.

@2:13 SENATOR PETERSON:
This isnt about the administration and it should not be about the administration of the state nor federal level when it comes to Obamacare but in fact it is and why is that. I have talked to so many members in the House and Senate and you know what it comes down to? Are you ready for this? It is not ab how many federal dollars we can receive. You ready? You want to know what its about? Its about race. Now nobody wants to talk about that. Its about the race of this African American President because this same thing has been offered by who? By former Speaker Newt Gingrich in the past. Yeah he had a similar bill to what President Obama has offered. Similar legislation was offered! It comes down to the race of the Pres. Of The US which causes people to disconnect and step away from the substance of the bill. So I agree with Senator Buffington, it shouldnt be about the title. It should not be about the title. It should be about the subject matter and others have shared that with me personally. You know the reason I cant support this Senator Peterson is not because of you, but it is because I cannot go back to my district and face my constituents and tell them that I embraced, not Medicaid expansion, not 100% of funds going to help the uninsured of Louisiana, I cannot say I supported Obamacare. So I guess we cant support JindalCares either. I think thats what it all comes down to if we are honest with ourselves. But well continue the madness here in this state. We will leave here on June 6th, the Hospital Association you will get what you want because this bill is about to pass but what will you do after that when these Private-public partnerships dont work? What will you do? Will you come back to the legislature begging us to help you expand Medicaid? Will you be on the front line with stickers then asking us to step up? Well you can do that now. Theres time, time will tell.
Are there any democrats that DON’T play the race card at every opportunity?
Is there a decent democrat in the United States?
Dear Ms. Peterson,
Get back with us when you can discuss issues on an adult, intellegent level.
Soooo sick of the race card. It needs to be pulled out of the deck and burned.
This is what I know.
When I’m out of money Obama supporters will be out of food, housing and medical care.
When I reach bottom...so will they. It will be the one bright spot in my otherwise government stolen life,
I can’t wait to see those SOB’s suffer.
He’s right.. I do not like whites or blacks that are for Obama care..
I despise the blacks for certain reasons and the whites for totally other reasons..
But it is pretty racial.. Asians I tend to like and tolerate Mexicans..
It’s the parasitism that sets me off.. most likely..
