Group fails in bid to recall Ariz. sheriff

PHOENIX (AP) — A campaign to force a recall election against the polarizing sheriff of metropolitan Phoenix failed on Thursday after recall organizers said they couldn't collect enough voter signatures to bring the lawman to the ballot again.

Organizers of the recall effort against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio needed to turn in more than 335,000 valid voter signatures by 5 p.m. Thursday to force a recall election.

"It is a sad day," said recall campaign manager Lilia Alvarez. "It is a disappointment."

Recall organizers won't reveal the number of signatures they gathered. That said, the last update they gave on their numbers five weeks ago was that they gathered 200,000 signatures.

"The count at this point doesn't matter," Alvarez said in deciding not to reveal the number of signatures gathered.

Arpaio issued a statement suggesting that recall organizers aren't revealing the number of signatures they gathered because they are embarrassed by the level of their failure. "This effort failed because the good people of Maricopa County, whom I'm honored to serve, rejected the wrong-headed idea of overturning an election," Arpaio said.

Arpaio supporters say the sheriff won re-election in November fair and square and that recall organizers shouldn't have been allowed to contest the election simply because they didn't like the outcome.

The amount of signatures they gathered doesn’t matter? The hell is doesn’t. If the sheriff is so “polarizing,” as the author of the article writes, you would think it would be a snap to get 350,000 signatures in Phoenix, which is one of the nations largest cities.

They claim to have had 200,000 signatures several weeks ago, but is that number accurate. Also, even if they did have that amount, how many were authentic?

Another epic fail by those who would destroy this nation.

Schaedenfreud BUMP!

I love it when the scumbag Democrats lose.
I also get a kick out of scumbag Democrats like this AP writer, Jacques Billeaud. Has anybody ever once read an AP piece that referred to a scumbag rat as “polarizing”? No. Nobody has.

Only Republicans are “extreme”, “controversial”, “polarizing”, etc. Rats never are.

Why do I get the crazy notion that had the recall petition succeeded and gotten enough votes to force a recall election, the “news” media would be all over the place with front page/top of the hour reports?

"I will bet about 25% of those signatures were BS too"

Or maybe the problem was the libs didn't have those BS signatures because they were afraid they just might be held accountable if they got caught!

The potential for prosecution and jail time is what will keep democrats honest.

They gathered 200,000 signatures but those are not all valid signitures. Likely they did not reach the half way mark.

Recall efforts should not be reported by the media until they qualify or until they are very close to gathering the number of signatures needed.
