Kids Who Planted Michelle’s Obamas Garden 'Rewarded' with Snap-Pea Salad

Elementary school children who helped First Lady Michelle Obama plant her White House garden this year were rewarded for their labor, with arugula and snap peas.

“On Tuesday, First Lady Michelle Obama joined school children from across the country to harvest the summer crop from the White House Kitchen Garden,” Mrs. Obama’s anti-obesity initiative “Let’s Move!” said on its blog.

Children who helped plant the garden this April were invited back to the White House for the harvest, “so they could see the fruits of their labors.” Kids from two New Jersey schools affected by Hurricane Sandy were also invited.

“First Lady Michelle Obama and the students got their hands dirty picking produce from the garden,” Let’s Move! said.

“We’re going to actually get to eat what we harvest today,” Mrs. Obama told the children. “So in addition to doing some harvesting, you guys are going to help – we’re going to do some veggie flatbread pizzas with the vegetables from the garden.”

“You guys up for a little cooking, too?” she said.

First up on the menu was a “Garden Salad with Radishes, Spring Peas and White House Honey Dressing.”

“After picking the vegetables from the garden,” Let’s Move! said, “White House chefs prepared a salad with spring garden lettuce, snap peas, radishes, and White House honey vinaigrette dressing, and grilled vegetable flatbread.”

The recipe was posted online, and included two pounds of assorted greens, “such as arugula, frisee, bibb lettuce, Romaine, [and] spinach.” The salad also called for one cup of spring peas and four red radishes.

The children also were given the veggie flatbread pizza Mrs. Obama described, which was topped with broccoli, shallots, fennel, and chard leaves.

Shortly after moving in to the White House, the first lady ordered an organic vegetable garden built on the South Lawn, to promote healthy eating habits. In March 2009, Mrs. Obama said the garden’s most important role would be to educate children about healthy fruits and vegetables.

“My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities,” Obama told the New York Times. Mrs. Obama then started her Let’s Move! initiative to fight childhood obesity and change the eating habits of children.

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man’s made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that’s a-weak and a back that’s strong

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don’t you call me ‘cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin’ when the sun didn’t shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said “Well, a-bless my soul”

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don’t you call me ‘cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin’, it was drizzlin’ rain
Fightin’ and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol’ mama lion
Cain’t no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don’t you call me ‘cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me comin’, better step aside
A lotta men didn’t, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don’t a-get you
Then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don’t you call me ‘cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the company store

Michelle Obama plant her

How much tax money was spent on "HER" garden so she could impress a bunch of lunatic liberals? Because she sure as hell doesn't eat it!

"school children from across the country"

Who paid to get them from 'across the country" to "HER" garden for a photo opt and a MSM press article?

I think I'll go puke up some arugula and snow peas!

I consider Sugar Snap Peas to be the candy in God’s Garden. I put them in a deep pan, cover with tap water, then bring to a boil and pour off the water, cover with cold water, let sit a minute then pour off the water and put them in a tupperware and drizzle my home made oil and vinegar based dressing over them. [The dressing has a lot more in it than just O&V, like a dash of Apple jack, ranch dressing powder, and a few other things, even a bit of filtered water.] Eat them from the tupperware like candy or on a salad. Mmmm, guuud. Had them on my lunch salad in fact!

After Katrina, I made several trips to Knoxville to inspect mayonaise being exported to Africa. To fill the container, the cartons were loose packed inside. The pallets were not used to allow more mayonaise in the container.

The load weighed 40,000 pounds or 20 tons /2 men =10 tons per man

I asked the young guys if they knew about loading 16 tons. They never heard of Tennessee Earnie. He was born just 60 mies up the road

It wore me out just watchimg

Obama celebrates spending binge with cocktails and wagyu steak

By Michelle Malkin • January 29, 2009 06:28 AM

Can the Obama administration be anymore tone deaf? After pushing his $1.1 trillion Generational Theft Act of 2009 through the House last night, the White House apparently decided to throw itself a swank cocktail party. According to ABC’s Jake Tapper, the menu included alcoholic beverages (vodka martinis are an Obama favorite, reportedly) and wagyu steak.

Yeah, “wagyu steak.” $100 per serving delicacy. I had to look it up, too.

On the heels of the most expensive inaugural celebration in American history and passage of a trillion-dollar spending binge that will saddle future generations with unprecedented debt, perhaps President Obama might consider cutting back on such indulgences.

Or is the White House exempt from “shared sacrifice,” Mr. President?

“New era of responsibility?”

Not so much.

2011: Steak Has A White House Winning Streak

A Top White House Food Story for 2011: Beef becomes the default entree for Presidential dinners. Will Barack Obama be remembered as President Obeef?...
Glorious cuts of beef were the entree for every major dinner that President Obama and First Lady Obama hosted in 2011, some with guest lists of hundreds. That stands in contrast to dinner tables across America, where beef consumption has plummeted 25% in the last thirty years, due to a combination of health and high-price concerns, according to the Department of Agriculture. Wagyus, Rib Eyes, Tenderloins, Petite Filets: The Obama dinner menus in 2011 read like a mash note to America’s cattle ranchers, because the beef served at the White House is always raised domestically. (Above: The President and Mrs. Obama with their counterparts at the South Korea State Dinner, which featured Texas Wagyu Rib Eye)

Past Presidents have offered entrees ranging from buffalo to venison to duck to fish to lamb at their high-profile dinners. Not so President Obama. 2011’s beefstravaganza included three State Dinners, the Governors’ Dinner, the Passover Seder, the President’s 50th birthday party, the Bipartisan Dinner, and the Combatant Commanders Dinner. Outside the White House, it was the same story: The President’s Return State Dinner in London for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the APEC Leaders Dinner in Hawaii had beef as the entree, too.

The heady cuts of beef served at the White House are rich and juicy, and range in price, depending on where and how the cattle were raised, but all are expensive. Wagyu often sells for upwards of $150 per pound, and is prized for rich fat marbling and thus intense flavor. The White House releases few details about sourcing, except for occasionally noting locations of cattle herds, such as “local” or “Nebraska” or “Oregon.”

First Lady Celebrates B-Day at Steakhouse Featuring $28 ‘Obama’ Burger—Kobe Beef, Bacon, Cheese

January 18, 2012 - 1:05 PM

Susan Jones and Greg Gwyn-Williams

(CNSNews.com) - Michelle Obama celebrated her 48th birthday Tuesday night with her husband and friends at a D.C. steakhouse where the menu features a $28 hamburger named “The Obama.”

BLT Steak describes its “Obama” burger as an 8-ounce American Kobe burger with bacon, cheddar cheese, burnt tomato ketchup, and scallion mustard.

American Kobe beef is from a line of Japanese Wagyu cattle, which traditionally are fed a special diet and massaged to produce the fat-marbling for which the meat is prized.

But the Obamas didn’t have burgers—they reportedly had steak in the private dining room.

Lord knows I’m not a fan of MaBelle but I never understood why her garden gets so much flak.

I learned to love veggies from picking and cooking them from my Grandmother’s garden, which had plants cultivated from seeds going back to her original Victory garden during WWII. I learned about hard work and self-reliance, taking pride in eating what I worked hard to put on the table.

Say what you will about her, and I’ll say it with ya, but I’m a fan of these activities. Kids should know where food comes from, learn how to get their hands dirty doing honest wholesome work, and know what to do if society blows up and they need to start from scratch.

If only the Mulatto Messaih and the First Wookie would decide “Let’s Move” out of the Public Housing (the White Hut), and back to the South side of Chicago, to be with “their people”....Deetroit would also be a good spot to mingle with their voterbase.

She wouldn’t be happy in Detroit. The people there are armed and don’t have laws dictating what they eat and drink. Even if there were laws, the people would simply ignore them like they do with smoking bans.

She and home boy wouldn’t survive Detroit.

Baraq and MooseChelle will become New Yorkers, just like BJ and Hill.

“Children who helped plant the garden this April were invited back to the White House for the harvest....”

Wow! I want some of that miracle grow product she must be using and a heaping helping of the special weather that must be over the White Hut. Maybe it’s something special in that toxic soil mix. Geeze, we sure could have used that stuff in farm country when I was growing up. Victory Gardeners everywhere must be green with envy.
