Opelousas Sen. Elbert Guillory has jumped to the Republican Party, becoming Louisiana's only black state senator in the GOP.
Guillory announced Friday that he's leaving the Democratic Party. A spokeswoman for the Secretary of State's Office said Guillory filed paperwork on Wednesday registering as a Republican. The state GOP says Guillory is Louisiana's first black Republican state senator since Reconstruction.

It’s getting harder and harder in southern states....even at the local level....to run as a Democrat.
I heard about this on Twitter Twitter earlier this afternoon. A black state Senator becomes a Republican and chides Democrats for their racial demagoguery, and not even a passing mention from the press.
The only “evolving” that’s P.C. is a lurch leftward.
I agree. Salad days are over for Dick Harpootlian’s crowd. The Southern Democrat is a dying breed.
Can’t trust a party-switcher. He’s just showing his true political motive - doing anything he can to stay in power.
The GOP establishment is just fine with such motives.
Exactly. That is why I liked Zell Miller ( former Georgia Govenor). He was a true conservative Democrat. He said he could not leave the party and tried to change it from within. He failed, but the man tried.
That’s what I’m thinking. The Democrats are taking heat, so all of a sudden he changes party. We don’t need Democrats in the Republican Party.
Thank you
Likely my worst faux pas ever....and that is saying something....
God bless
Wardaddy, you’re welcome. God Bless you too.
Alert! A black man has escaped the dem plantation and is speaking the truth! Alert! Danger! Destroy him!
All well and good...wisdom dictates beware the enemy within!
I might believe that if he wasn't black. Since he is, leaving the Democrat party is a BIG deal. Especially in the South.
“Cant trust a party-switcher. Hes just showing his true political motive - doing anything he can to stay in power.”
yep, ala charlie crist of Fl.
Actually, it takes a fair amount of gumption for a black Democrat politician to switch to the Republican Party.
I have known Elbert for over 17 years and he is a fine gentleman. He actually became a Democrat to get elected. So, yes, he is a party-switcher. If you look at the demographics of his district you will see that he is actually putting his political future on the line by re-registering as a Republican.
Well, let’s see what he does on upcoming votes then.
Here’s some local commentary from “The Dead Pelican” (Louisiana conservative online news):
