As the Syrian civil war rages on, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday on "Face the Nation," what's unfolding is "unfortunately a battlefield situation where [President] Bashar Assad now has the upper hand - and it's tragic - while we sit by and watch."
Last week McCain secretly visited the war-torn country to meet with some of the rebel forces taking on Assad, and stepped up his pressure on President Obama to provide them with arms. On Sunday, he called the opposition "very tough - they're battle-hardened. They're very dedicated. They are not al Qaeda; they are not extremists."
"We have some very strong and good people who are fighting for freedom and are being massacred as we speak," McCain said. "And remember all this talk we've had in the past year or two: It's inevitable that Bashar Assad will fall? Well I think we can't make that statement today.
"... Hezbollah has now invaded, the Iranians are there, Russia is pouring weapons in," he went on. "And anyone that believes that Bashar Assad is going to go to a conference in Geneva when he is prevailing on the battlefield, it's just ludicrous to assume that."
The administration has shied away from escalating its response to the ongoing violence in Syria, despite hotly debated evidence that chemical weapons were used there in the past few months. Mr. Obama has insisted he will not act on anything less than categorical evidence, making repeated allusions to the inaccurate information that drew the United States into the Iraq War.

Good. Let the giraffe pick up the pieces of his smouldering wreck. Much more preferable than another Morsi.
We’re not going into Syria, Juan. Why don’t you pick up a gun instead?
Only 7,000 Al-Qaeda? Gee Al-Qaeda Juan, with only 7,000 AQ Members in Syria, we should go ahead and arm them with some Chems or even nukes. /sarc
Has McCain ever NOT been on Sunday morning TV??
I think Assad is doing a great job stacking up the bodies. Soon Al Qaeda won’t have any left.
We don’t need to be there. We lost lotsa folks in our civil war. That’s what happens.
Would somebody, PLEASE, tell Sen McCain to sit down and be quiet?
He has no idea what he is talking about.
I hate to say it, but I will: Follow the money with this guy.
I think Assad is doing a great job stacking up the bodies. Soon Al Qaeda wont have any left.

Well put, although he is no good guy, being but a puppet for the Iranian/Hezbollah Axis.
The longer this plays out the better. Sort of like the WWI trench standoffs that killed many, but advanced little.
>To me, he just lost his Patriot creds.<
.
John lost his “Patriot” credits when he became a politician.
It’s what the Iraq/Iran War should have been...a war to bleed both sides completely dry.
Agreed. We need to wake up to the fact we’ve been the Saudis’ butt boys since the 70’s. Even though the Iranians aren’t our buddies, in this case, Syria, we should be on the same side to keep the Muslim Bastardhood out and do what little we can for the Christians.
Assad had the upper hand? Really? Doesn’t the government in power with control of the existing military always have the upper hand?
Three years ago, Bashar al-Assad was the undisputed dictator of all of Syria, as seemingly entrenched for life as Kim Jong-un and the Castro brothers seem today.
Now, Mr. Assad’s army has been so weakened it can’t even manage to hold onto a small Syrian village called Qusair even with the help of Hizbollah...and we’re supposed to believe that Mr. Assad has the upper hand?!
After days of drinking al-Qaeda’s Kool-Aid, John McCain has risen to new heights of senile dementia by becoming Islamo-terrorism’s most enthusiastic lobbyist in Washington.
Juan is upset that his and Ubama’s Muslim Brotherhood (aka, “al-Qaeda”) may not be able to get rid of the devil we know.
Well put!
>They are not al Qaeda; they are not extremists
They are deluded and dangerous followers of an evil cult called islam. They are brainwashed killers who emulate a make believe pedophile and moon daddy to the point of absurdity and murder. Killers who want to impose their sickness upon the world and abuse women while buggering their children. Pure evil and too stupid to change back into humans.
The war lasted 30 years. No matter...Just too many bad guys. But look around....very few Christians left.
It only took 19 guys to kill 3000. What’s that 0.06%?
“We have some very strong and good people who are fighting for freedom”
McPain is an idiot.
In the “revolution” in Iran, there were “democrats” and all kinds and all political persuasions who joined to be “fighting for freedom”.
They were not in charge; Khomeinei was. His group & his people were in charge, and all other “coalition” members and groups with their own grudges against the Shah and their own hopes were just additional BUT TEMPORARY soldiers for the “revolution”. They and their leaders were never in charge.
Outside of Khomeineis own group, some were allowed into the government, temporarily. Most all were eventually moved aside, targeted as “anti-revolitionary”, imprisoned, assassinated, disappeared or found self-exile. At one point 3,000 Leftists were killed in a few days.
In any such waring enterprise, the hopes and desires of the “cannon fodder” are often irrelevant to the core of the leaders who are running the show and will run the government.
McPain is a fool because he thinks the Syrian “opposition” is led by “freedom loving democrats”; its not.
That is sad because Assad is a dictator.
Four questions: If the events in Syria are really about Assad being a dictator, then (a) what kind of goverments do the U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia have, (b) why are all of them backers of the “Syrian opposition” including the terrorists, (c) why is there no “Arab Spring” happening in the Gulf States or Saudi Arabia, (c) how would they react to one.
The Syrian people are pawns in a religious proxy venue war-contest between a dictator who is friends with Iran, a nation run by radical fundamentalist Shia Muslium theocrats, and on the other side Sunnis across the Middle East and led by the radical fundamentalist Wahabi Sunni of Saudi Arabia and their philsophical friends the MB.
The west does not have a dog in that race.
They keep saying that “Assad is murdering his own people”. Well, I would guess that if armed “rebels” tried to take over our government by force then Obama would also wind up “murdering his own people” by mounting an armed defense.
