Three padlocks were cut to the Boston water supply aqueduct today.

Officials say the drinking water does not look to have been tampered with.

CBS Local reported:

The Global Dispatch reported:

The padlocks to hatches of an aqueduct outside of Boston that supplies drinking water to the metropolitan area were found cut Monday, leading to local concerns after there was a trespassing incident.

Officials say the drinking water does not appear to have been tampered with.

The CBS affiliate is reporting the details, noting that three padlocks were cut from separate access hatches located at approximately half-mile intervals along the aqueduct. Police say there is evidence of an attempt to cut a fourth lock.

State Police are investigating, though they say “there is no evidence of any crime other than vandalism.”

The MWRA says it doesn’t appear anyone tried to tamper with the water supply and there does not appear to be any contamination or changes in water quality.....

And the memos from Russia were ignored, too.

Doesn't anyone like to think beyond a 24 hour period.

Belive me the water authority has this covered!
Water is not just sucked in and deliverd it has state and fed mandates that have to be proved before anyone gets it as a potable water supply! And is logged daily if not hourly by by the water authority> All personel are trained and have to obtain a liscense issued by the state as a qualified employee!
Unless they are asleep on the job!

Don’t you know that you can just look at the water and magically tell whether its been tampered with or not? :-)

with a briefcase nuke....

I don't see how a suitcase nuke would apply in regards to this incident.

However, It may not be what you were referring to, so...

“In your opinion, what substance would they be most likely to use?”

Oh man! Good question! I don’t know. If there’s a lot of water involved, it might take an awful lot, quantity-wise, to be effective.
Our system is so small that it wouldn’t take much.
But I’m praying it was simply vandalism. Why cut 3 locks, and try to cut a 4th? I would think a terrorist would cut only one, and do his deed. Then replace the lock with the same model, so no one would even know it had been tampered with. Wouldn’t be discovered until an investigation, or just the next time a worker tried to open it.

Worked for a Water Authority. We lowered a bucket of fish into the tanks and reservoirs.

"whatever" might include hauling 100 pounds of poison in the trunk of that car

No offense, but you're maybe believing DHS a little too much. We can only be so watchful. If I wanted to feel safer when I'm in MA, I'd worry more about crazed Chechnyan (and other) terrorist wannabees who are allowed to live there and get educated there. The water stuff? I'm more concerned about what a polluter can do to the water supply which is, by the way, constantly tested.

Theme of a Stephen King novel. The movie starred the guy from Homeland and Band of Bros.

The issue is that the flow of water into Boston is so massive that any poison would be pretty much diluted by the time it got there.

I used to pee in the Quabbin when I was a kid. Not a fan of Boston.

Boston is a favorite for Muzzie terrorists. How many of the flights on 9/11/01 originated at Logan? Boston must be famous for soft security.

Let’s not get out of control. I am not a fan of the city, but the Bruins and Celtics are a religion. And not a religion of peace.

Out here in Western MA, the Red Sox are pretty popular, but the Yankees and football Giants are pretty well represented.

How many other facilities around the country are these throwbacks watching? They noticed cut locks and before they caught the “students” on a field trip! Something is starting to smell!

I don’t think folks here appreciate the shear volume of water we are discussing.

Plus the fact that such a huge percentage leaks out along the way...

You would have to dump oil drums of poison in multiple places to make any difference.

Now, if you wanted to make a mess, you could affect the water delivery with a few sticks of TNT...but that is a different issue.

Back in the early days of WW II, Britain formed a volunteer organization called the Home Guard.

They also made appeals to US citizens to "send us your arms, we have none of our own". A direct quote from my Uncle who was a Marine Captain during WWII.

“what substance would they be most likely to use?”

It does not have to be terribly toxic or even effective.

People will go nuts if there is evidence that 2 kg of Diazinon pesticide was dumped in. Naturally it would be so diluted that there will be more Diazinon washed in from lawns, but people will go nuts. Especially if the MSM is in on it and creates a panic.

“Well Bob, the latest tests results show almost 14 attograms per liter measured at the trunk line. Diazinon is a dangerous pesticide that can cause convulsions, death, and autism, plus it is deadly to pets and fish. Authorities say there is no threat, but an empty 2 kilogram container of Diazinon was found only a quarter mile from one of the water systems most vulnerable spots.”
